Sometimes, it is better to involve the staff in changes and add one to one communication with the leadership. This can placate doubts and makes transparency useful for everyone. Mid level management even if becomes redundant would get credit for effective changemaker.

In my experience, nothing creates trust like transparency. It isn’t easy to do. However, given that you should have established relationships with your constituents, hopefully you have simultaneously established transparent communication. In addition to transparency, ensure your communication includes an authentic voice of empathy. Let them know you care. Share details about the decision making process. Describe how you ensured fairness throughout. Then, transparency becomes an easy outcome.

Part of transparency is providing genuine answers to questions asked about the new changes. Be open and patient with your audience, providing explanations for better understanding and clarity. The presenter can prepare a brief leaflet with anticipated questions and answers that the audience can refer to even after the discussion to assimilate the information faster

Being transparent can be really hard when you have confidential information that you need to protect, for example a funding agreement that isn't finalised yet, staff performance or reasons why someone is taking leave. In these circumstances it's importnat to maintain trust in the team by sharing the reasons why you can't be completely open.

You need to calibrate 3 factors: Challenge, Support and Structure. The challenge is the heat you’re putting on your org to change. Sometimes the heat is inadequate to motivate ppl, so it needs to be turned up. Sometimes people are overwhelmed and the heat needs to be turned down. Support is critical because for you the changes are as clear as day, but to the members of your org, it can be very confusing. Provide them with help. Don’t lose patience - keep supporting them. Structure: how are things organized in such a way as to make the outcome more likely. What policies and procedures need to be put in place? Change management then becomes managing these 3 factors and deciding when/how to turn one up and the others down.

Additionally, explain why the change is happening and how it will benefit the team. Share detailed plans and expected outcomes. Offer specific support, like training sessions or Q&A meetings, to help your team adjust. Clear communication and support will help your team feel more involved and committed to the change.

Again, this piggybacks on being transparent. If you allow your team to be engaged early, you have time to address concerns, brainstorm other ideas, formulate the best plan and talk through any confusion there may be.

The bigger the organization gets, the more crucial it is to speak clearly. Take time to slow down and clarify everything you want to say as simply as possible. This can eliminate a lot of confusion later on.

One thing that I learned from a wonderful mentor of mine is to ensure you always have clear communication with those you are leading. You always need to ensure that those you are speaking to are on the same page and understand the details of your conversation. Reframing and summarizing are key skills in this situation!

Communication is key for any organization and I think it is interesting that many non-profits and other professional services firms have internal jargon that they use and are familiar with when referring to their organization. Showing support and making it known you are available and accessible is vital. In addition to nonprofit management, I have also had the opportunity to be in retail management for about 15 years, being open and accessible is vital in any management role. Your people need to have a way to get a hold of you quickly and efficiently.

Inevitable adjustments need to be made. As your non profit grows, so do the needs of the organization. What may have worked for you in it's infancy stage may not be cutting it as you progress. I've always described it as if it were alive

I am a bit concerned about this particular article. It seems to have a distinct bias that organizational change is 'top down.' In my experiences and research, I firmly believe that the most effective and lasting changes are made by involving stakeholders of the non-profit not just the leaders. Not only will there be smoother implementation, buy-in by all stakeholders provides insights not always considered by leadership teams.
