Recognition plays a very key role in boosting the morale of every team. No matter how little it may appear to be, being intentional about it can go a long way to motivate the team in giving up their best. It can just be an email to all staff appreciating the effort of the deserving team member or instituting a more organized form of recognition like star employee of the month or the quarter where other team members can nominate and justify why one deserves to be recognized. Dinner or lunch out for deserving team members can also go a long way to motivate the team members to give their best. If efforts put in by the team members go unnoticed, others do not put in their best as there will not be any motivation to do so.

In my experience, I have seen many people who have the potentials but have left their jobs due to this lack of support from their employers. Coaching can also be done to prepare people for higher roles.

Micromanaging your team is one of the ways that brings the morale of the team down. The team members should be given the free role to operate within their confined space and certain powers must be given to them to be able operate effectively. As a manager, even sometimes if they go beyond the powers given them and is for the organization good, without violating any laid down procedures, you should be able to stand with them so that they are encouraged. Even if you have to chastise them, do so behind the scenes and show them the right way to go in future. Once you empower them, then you as the leader will be able to think strategically and be more focused on bigger things.

If for nothing at all, COVID-19 has taught us that there can be a hybrid way of working. With the changes and the dynamics of business expectations, more and more is being demanded from finance professionals. This makes the team invest a lot of time in their job sometimes at the expense of their personal commitments. There should a balance between how we demand a lot of work from the team “vis-a-vis” their personal engagements. The work should not be such that the team should report to the office at any given occasion especially during closing of the books. Those who have other commitments like family, religious and social obligations should be able to operate remotely without necessarily pressurizing them to show up in the office.
