As a leader in corporate accounting, you know the importance of having a motivated and inspired team. Recognition goes a long way in motivating your accounting team. Take the time to acknowledge individual achievements and celebrate team successes. Recognition plays a very key role in boosting the morale of every team. No matter how little it may appear to be, being intentional about it can go a long way to motivate the team in giving up their best. It can just be an email to all staff appreciating the effort of the deserving team member or instituting a more organized form of recognition like star employee of the month or the quarter where other team members can nominate and justify why one deserves to be recognized. Dinner or lunch out for deserving team members can also go a long way to motivate the team members to give their best. If efforts put in by the team members go unnoticed, others do not put in their best as there will not be any motivation to do so.

Providing opportunities for professional development is crucial for keeping your accounting staff motivated. Encourage them to pursue certifications like the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CMA (Certified Management Accountant), which can enhance their skills and career prospects. Offer in-house training sessions on the latest accounting software or regulations to keep your team updated and engaged. Investing in their growth shows that you value their contributions and are committed to their success.

Providing an opportunity for the team members to grow in their career is a major contributing factor that can boost their morale in the work place. Growth opportunities can be both formal and informal. Encouraging accounting staff to take up professional courses to improve their skill set so that they can be authority in their area of work gives them confidence to give up their best. Most organizations do not even support professional development of its staff and this has become a demotivating factor for many finance professionals. In my experience, I have seen many people who have the potentials but have left their jobs due to this lack of support from their employers. Coaching can also be done to prepare people for higher roles.

Proposer des formations afin de monter en qualification est un des meilleurs outils pour fidéliser et récompenser ses salariés. Beaucoup de salariés sont en recherche constante d'évolutions et la formation peut leur ouvrir les portes de nouveaux postes.
Empowerment is key to inspiring your accounting staff. Give them autonomy over their work and the authority to make decisions within their areas of expertise. This trust can lead to increased job satisfaction and a sense of ownership over their tasks. Encourage them to take initiative and contribute ideas on improving processes. When staff feel empowered, they're more likely to take on challenges with enthusiasm and a proactive attitude.

Micromanaging your team is one of the ways that brings the morale of the team down. The team members should be given the free role to operate within their confined space and certain powers must be given to them to be able operate effectively. As a manager, even sometimes if they go beyond the powers given them and is for the organization good, without violating any laid down procedures, you should be able to stand with them so that they are encouraged. Even if you have to chastise them, do so behind the scenes and show them the right way to go in future. Once you empower them, then you as the leader will be able to think strategically and be more focused on bigger things.
Promote a collaborative environment where your accounting staff can work together effectively. Teamwork enhances problem-solving capabilities and allows for the sharing of best practices. Organize team-building activities that are not only fun but also reinforce the importance of collaboration. A team that communicates well and supports each other is more resilient and can achieve greater results than individuals working in silos.
Recognizing the need for a healthy work-life balance is essential for a motivated accounting team. Encourage your staff to take breaks, use their vacation time, and maintain a manageable workload. Flexible working arrangements, such as remote work options or adjustable hours, can help accommodate personal commitments and reduce burnout. When your team feels that their well-being is a priority, they're more likely to be engaged and productive.

If for nothing at all, COVID-19 has taught us that there can be a hybrid way of working. With the changes and the dynamics of business expectations, more and more is being demanded from finance professionals. This makes the team invest a lot of time in their job sometimes at the expense of their personal commitments. There should a balance between how we demand a lot of work from the team “vis-a-vis” their personal engagements. The work should not be such that the team should report to the office at any given occasion especially during closing of the books. Those who have other commitments like family, religious and social obligations should be able to operate remotely without necessarily pressurizing them to show up in the office.

Constructive feedback is invaluable for both personal growth and motivation. Regularly provide your accounting staff with clear, actionable feedback that helps them understand their strengths and areas for improvement. Create an open dialogue where they can also give their input on how the department can evolve. This two-way communication fosters a dynamic and responsive work environment where everyone is committed to continuous improvement.
