Here's how you can overcome challenges when leading innovative projects.

Embracing uncertainty is a requirement for true success on any project because any new project implies change and so you are embracing change. And any new project can and should be innovative- approach it that way. Keep an open mind and listen and watch for opportunities to refine and advance your project and Connect the dots. Make it something you look forward to doing each day.

In my experience, every project involves some level of uncertainty, but innovation projects have the highest degree of it, especially regarding estimates of time, cost, and resource availability. The best approach is to recognize that you'll need to address and resolve these uncertainties as they arise. Being agile is crucial in this context, as it allows for the application of critical thinking and the development of great solutions.

A new project is a new opportunity- to grow, to learn, to implement, to manage and to thrive. As a leader, any new project offers innovation and growth. It brings forth newer challenges and constraints that were previously unknown or unanticipated. Overcoming the same is leadership. Failing to achieve the set goals or achieving the same is co-dependent on the team you build, challenges you forsee and vision you input. Sometimes, the challenges are more intrinsic than extrinsic in nature.

To overcome challenges in an innovative and vague space, it's essential to embrace ambiguity and view it as a blank canvas. At first, things may seem confusing and disjointed, much like the initial strokes of a painting. However, over time, as the project evolves, everything will start to make sense, revealing a cohesive and beautiful masterpiece. Patience and curiosity can triumph over the fear of failure.

Sometimes you have to focus on the tree rather than the forest. You may have a myriad of issues to work through, and it can be daunting to think of all the issues that may come up. But don’t fall into the paralysis by analysis trap. Keep the journey and end goal in mind, but focus on what’s in front of you- what’s first. Solve that problem, then move to the next. If it’s a particularly thorny issue, break it down into smaller chunks. Or, find a way around it. Solving innovative problems is by definition difficult- you’re doing something new. So embrace the challenge and accept that there will be setbacks; but know that with persistence, teamwork, and creativity, you will come out the other side.

Manage Risk: Innovation involves uncertainty and risk. Recognize potential risks early and develop strategies to mitigate them.

Risk Management is one of the topics that attracts me more. I prefer to categorise the risk as High, Medium or Low for the Task so that a proper mitigation plan can be created for high and medium risk and low risk can be put into observations. So following this approach to identify risk based on its impact like high, med or low, creating a mitigation plan and therefore creating/updating the documents like logs and registers helps to act proactively in the project and helps to keep a project on track.

As others noted, following a traditional risk management plan is the foundation of trying to mitigate unnecessary risks. However, what many in Technology could learn from how risk is managed in other areas is that properly managing risk goes beyond a project pattern with clear steps and expectations. Instead, you need to coach and encourage a mindset across the team to always partner a risk lens view on every decision in combination with the benefits determination. In the end, every organization is going to have different risk appetites that need to be deeply embedded in how everyone works.

Note to the chain of command over an innovative project: A lot depends on your management. If management frees staff to fail, your result will be a lot different from management in a culture of punishment.

Innovative projects demand diverse perspectives. Assembling a team with varied backgrounds, skills, and viewpoints is essential. Look beyond technical expertise; consider cognitive diversity, cultural differences, and interdisciplinary collaboration. A team that reflects the complexity of the challenge can tackle it more effectively. Foster a sense of purpose and commitment among team members—they should feel invested in the project’s success.

While drinking on the job can’t be done, have a brainstorming session with as much of a diverse staff as possible and tell everyone no idea, how weird, is off the table. It may well be the naive, without preconceived prejudices, might be the key to dealing with the complex.

Lead by example. It is easy to tell your team to share information but there is a need to demonstrate this as a leader. Create mechanisms and platforms for sharing knowledge and information.

To demonstrate the ability to adapt and maneuver with agility, maintain a growth mindset throughout a project. Practice acceptance of new circumstances as they arise in order to avoid dwelling on conditions that may no longer exist. Maintain motivation by keeping your focus on moving forward, managing setbacks, and demonstrating grit as you continue leading your team toward accomplishing their goal.

Fostering a culture of knowledge sharing is indispensable to effective program management. By promoting open communication and continuous learning within your team, you not only enhance individual competencies but also build a robust collective intelligence. This dynamic exchange of insights and experiences empowers your team to navigate unexpected challenges more effectively. Encouraging a free flow of knowledge ensures that everyone is equipped with the latest information and best practices, ultimately driving the success of your projects and programs.

How important is "knowledge sharing" I learned that from our group leader, who attended a workshop and later on he shared the learnings with all the HODs. That approach helped us to work effectively. I decided to follow the same and started sharing the good practices, among the team. I paid attention to what my team members and peers were sharing. No doubt, initially the members were reluctant but when they realised that actually if they started sharing the knowledge with others then their learning repository would also grow day by day. Moreover, they are finding solutions to challenges quickly as all are contributing to overcoming challenges.

Have you ever worked with someone who doesn't share knowledge? They are the gatekeepers of progress. The best teams are made up of players who can play every position. They specialize in one position, of course, but by knowing the other positions, they can fine-tune their performance to achieve the best overall results. For example, stopping production to make a repair that can only be done by one specific maintenance person with the machine's code is counterproductive to the manufacturing line's performance. Every system needs redundancy, and every employee should know enough to fill in for their teammates, at least temporarily. Sharing knowledge like this allows your employees to demonstrate high flexibility and loyalty.

Knowledge sharing is one of the key element of a good team. Different people have their skills and experience, through the sharing process the whole team can improve their performance.

Fail Fast, Learn Faster: Failure is not the enemy; stagnation is. Encourage rapid experimentation and iteration. Create a safe environment where failure is seen as a stepping stone toward success. When setbacks occur, analyze them objectively. What did we learn? How can we pivot? Adjust course swiftly based on insights gained. Remember, every failure brings you closer to the solution.

Well, first, you gotta have the right team behind you - people who are all about growth and learning. Then, you gotta be okay with trying new things and failing sometimes. Make sure everyone knows what they're working towards, give them the freedom to own their projects, and keep the communication flowing. Stay flexible, get creative with resources, and celebrate the small wins. And most importantly, lead by example, stay curious, and keep your team motivated. That's how you turn obstacles into opportunities!

Make sure there is an executive sponsor to help with corporate politics and grow change agents to assist with the roll out. Make sure training is on the schedule and they communication throughout the project is frequent and honest. What is the innovative change? How will it benefit stakeholders?
