First, I think while in person focus on making a genuine connection. Then I always ask what's the person's preferred way to connect. Through that medium I send a note saying how I really enjoyed our conversation. If our prior discussion highlighted ways your talents can serve them request a quick and easy follow up conversation/virtual chat to learn more. If you're still unclear you can still set up a follow up chat or take time to be aware of what they post and comment to help establish a rapport. Then you can schedule a follow up chat perhaps based on something they said. I think the mistake people make is not fostering a human connection. It's important to think long term and not treat people like a dollar sign.
