How can you prepare for a leadership role with mentoring?

I would question the words of “set your goals” partially. Coaching would be a fit to this where you are focussing on a clear goal you want to achieve. Mentoring is a longer process and regular exchange of a (often) more experienced person equipped with a knowledge or special experience with a person who is interested to learn and exchange. I agree that setting up goals are important but not to be better on a special skill or improve grades or win a (tennis) match…but more based on general improvements and psychological support by levering wisdoms, experiences and following / getting inspired by proven track records. Learning from the best or others learnings and even mistakes. Get many mentors and I recommend a career “Sponsor” on top.

Using these sessions to reflect on current experiences to explore ways of responding can look like considering languaging, exploring theory and models of practice, examining values and rehearsing assertive communication. All these processes allow experimentation in work and life to develop a responsive way of being rather than reactive and habitual ways. Having a supportive soundboard to explore solutions while building confidence in knowing yourself can be an effective process to reflect and practice new approaches, test insights and create healthier ways of building better relationships with authenticity.
