Becoming and expert in the field of any industry and becoming a consultant does not only require knowledge. Anyone who wants to be a consultant need to think broader aspects and influences of the industry. How does geopolitical changes affect the industry.

Without building and continuously enhancing and demonstrating expertise, a consultant can not rise to a higher rank such as director or partner, leave alone survive in the industry. Having spent the better part of 3 decades in this industry and seen many folks come in and leave after a few years for non-consulting jobs, all I can say is keeping your expertise relevant and sharp is the first step, demonstrating value and thought leadership every day on the job and further selling your capabilities to your stakeholders (internal as well as external) are the ingredients of being a successful trusted advisor

Director and Partner titles are the most coveted in consulting. Here are some practical tips that help you navigate: 1. At entry level, functional and technical knowledge are both very important. Relative to other skills, the weightage of these will keep reducing as you climb higher the ladder. 2. For those at the mid level (manager) its more about understanding the skills and strengths of your team, and making sure they are working together optimally. 3. At Director and Partner roles, revenue generation becomes extremely important. Only those who can build client relationships and sell services, can stake claim to Director and Partner roles.

Consulting is a challenging skills, to get to the higher echelons and become a Consulting Director you need to have build up not only your specialism and industry knowledge you require the ability to liaise with various people within industry and build longstanding relationships that you can utilise going forward. Match this with being a keen problem solver and the ability to stand back analyse a problem and come up with a unique solution that works for all parties.

Leadership is a sensitive subject, and we unfortunately don't have too many great leaders. Though there are some born leaders, this skill can be acquired too. As a consulting Director you need to build the trust and respect, you will need excellent communication and collaboration skill ,build a good network, and then be knowledgeable and equipped to provide solutions to problems, most importantly lead with examples and inspire others, remember that leadership is skill you can develop with time and right intent, so keep working to improve it everyday

Developing strong leadership abilities is essential for a consulting director, as it enables you to guide customers, teams, manage complex projects, and drive business growth. As I developed my leadership skill I assessed my leadership style, sought feedback from peers, friends, mentors, and team members. This helped my identify areas for improvement and build my Emotional Intelligence (EQ) which I believe is critical for the success of a consulting director. I learnt from setbacks and failures without letting them undermine my confidence. I also developed patience and persistence as I believe they are the crown jewels of a consulting director. That helped me develop the determination to pursue goals even in the face of obstacles.

One thing that has helped me in my path is practising good leadership even when I was at entry-level in the industry. Sense of responsibility, courage, confidence, integrity (not over promising and under delivering), honesty, 'we' instead of 'I' really helped me climb the Consulting and business development career ladder fast. Opportunities to lead might not come on time, I started leading by volunteering to assist or take up the task of my team lead without extra benefits, most times I never got credits for the job but it gave me the chance to learn faster than my mates.

Business development is one of the most critical components of growing a business. Being a subject matter expert is crucial but how do you market that skill? A hustle mindset along with not being afraid to ask for business is fundamental.

Everyone want to grow their business. The reasons for reaching out to a Consulting Director is to get the best insight from an expert in the domain on how to scale the business. Hence the purpose of the consultation is to provide solutions and work towards growth of the business for this a business mindset is a must and understanding of all the aspects of the business is mandatory. For me it’s about knowing your customer and knowing your business. Being able to identify what the customer needs, even if it is not in your area of expertise. You will know someone who is an expert!

As a consultant you don't really grow your business mainly you grow business for the companies that employ you. What you grow, is your reputation. Completing a contract as a consultant makes your reputation grow especially if you complete on or before time or under cost. Word about your achievements passes from your clients very quickly to either their own organization or to other companies and they will look to hire you. Believe me it can lead to many options for work.

To be able to decide the priorities, the most important ingredient is clarity, get the data and information required to take the correct decision as to what should be put on top of the list. Whenever pressed with time and need to balance and prioritize, make the right judgment, sometimes it could be juggling between important deliverables or could be between work or family or friends, or even personal health and wellbeing. A well informed decision will always be important and will help prioritize. Juggling multiple things will be an art that you will have to learn, and success will depend on how good you are doing that.

Balancing is easy if you have the correct people in your working teams. High demands are achievable but also depends on your customer requirements and having a good relationship with them. Your working attitude and management skills go along way to impress customers and stakeholders. Correct planning and delivery can reduce the pressure of high demands on yourself. Correct and positive updates on progress leads to customers and stakeholders being happier taking away pressure on yourself. Getting customers and stakeholders believe in your ability to complete the project is imperative. Meet them on weekly basis give reports and plans using a 3 week system last week, this week ongoing and next week plan.

In my experience, balancing priorities can be one of the key challenges for a consultant director. There’s a fine line between consulting and directing. As a consultant director, you’re not only looking at what’s happening within your clients’ realm but you’re also managing a team and building a lasting strategy to grow the practice within your firm. It’s important to remember that alone you won’t make much of progress. Once you lay out a clear strategy and path to get there, rely on your allies (your team). And ensure to delegate based on people’s strengths and motivations. As soon as that’s clear, ensure you’re building on client success and aligning as a strategic advisor and partner.

It's not so much about splitting your time 50/50 between work and leisure but making sure a consultant feels fulfilled and content in both areas of their life. A healthy balance could be: meeting your deadlines at work while still having time for friends and hobbies. having enough time to sleep properly and eat well. Stress and poor time management kills a consultant.

Personally I love this part of my job. I love wearing so many different hats and balancing multiple projects which are at various stages of progress. Some say I have ADHD; I don't know. I just love this aspect of being a consultant. If you don't like the idea of being on the move or of being tied up with multiple projects at once, you need to think carefully about which model of work will work for you.

To aspire towards a Consulting Director role, actively research and understand the key qualifications and performance metrics essential for the position. Then, align your professional development and work performance with these criteria. This involves not only meeting but exceeding expectations in your current role, demonstrating leadership skills, strategic thinking, and a consistent track record of success. By embodying the qualities and capabilities of a Consulting Director before you attain the title, you position yourself as a natural candidate for the role.

In addition to all the points mentioned you need to understand that your expertise is not about products/software but about managing teams. You need to understand what your clients need and what team will help you to provide the solution. If you can do this being cost effective and deliver under 90 days your organization will grow. A strong team allows you to offer a fixed bid, which will make you competitive and you need strong PMO skills in order to manage the scope and deliver. Create templates of your offer at a good price point compared to other consulting firms and after delivering a couple of projects you will be invited to other bids based on customer feedback and references.

The saying “Those who can’t do consult” - prove this false. Try and get as hands on as you can with your projects. Make sure you guide your direct reports so they grow their skill set as well.

The critical aspect of Consulting would be to inspire the clients for taking a path that ensures better performance metrics. Gaining trust and collaboration needless to say would be the high point in a continued relationship.
