How would you navigate a situation where team members have differing critical thinking approaches?

One thing I’ve found helpful is keeping an open mind and actively listening to the various thoughts expressed by colleagues around me. Different levels of insight & ideas allow better brain storming capabilities to find a better equipped solution.

One of the most beautiful things about humans is our differences. If you are leading a team of people, you must understand that they will have different ways of thinking and approaching problem-solving. In such situations, the first thing is to accept their differences and allow room for open communication, where each team member can express their thoughts and approaches in a respectful manner. This way, you will be able to understand the nature of the problem and determine the best approach to solving it, or even collaborate on ideas to achieve a better and more effective result.

Navigating differing critical thinking approaches in a team involves valuing diverse insights, ensuring clear and respectful communication, acknowledging varied inputs, and discussing pros and cons objectively. Facilitate focused discussions, consolidate viewpoints, and aim for consensus where possible. Both are good minds and if put together, they'll be great minds. But in reality, it not easy to put both together. Too many chef spoils the soup, there probably be no soup served. The one that backs off is a more confident one because to avoid a Ego vs Ego situation, it takes maturity. The confident one understands he/she does not need to win every battle, does not need to always have the last say. True value in a person has no external dependency. Its wise not to intervene just yet and wait to see how the interaction would turn out.

Throughout my experience as a Project Manager, I have been through similar situations, and for sure having different approaches to critical thinking is a good thing that will bring valuable contributions to the business goals which is the main purpose of projects. Firstly, listen to their opinions and keep the valuable contributions from each one of their thoughts. Secondly, compile them all together as one approach aligned with the company objectives, and finally reach an agreement between all the team members about having the same strategies for the next challenges that could be faced onwards the project development.

An example of this I’ve seen is when communication is made between specialist teams. For example if investigations is working with medical assessment team or vice versa, using minimal jargon but communicating in a clear, effective and concise manner allows for less confusion.

I know how vital it is to express your thoughts clearly, avoiding jargon (or actually maybe even sometimes adding it, if your audience get it better). It's not just about speaking—it's about listening too. Listening skill all the time underestimated. Actively understanding your colleagues' perspectives fosters mutual respect and bridges the gap between different thinking styles. When we communicate well, we create a collaborative environment where everyone feels valued and understood. This makes our team stronger and more innovative.

Its not uncommon for team members to have different critical thinking approaches. Its therefore important to take on the approach on how each can complement each other without necessarily enforcing homogeneity of a given approach.

Collaboration is something that should be implemented more in business decisions. There are people within your business that have interests and/or qualifications that you may not be aware of. By allowing your staff to have a voice, it allows for a potential breakthrough in procedures or operational upgrades to boost a business.

Resolving conflicts is imperative, and ensuring conflicts are handled and solved in a professional and ethical manner is vital for the business to function. When workplace gossip and politics get in the way of a professional resolution, it begins to snowball and create a nasty effect on the people around the business. An example of this would be creating a safe environment for concerns and feelings to be expressed confidentially and be handled with the utmost respect and care. Each party involved in a dispute has to be considered equally and a solution must be found that addresses all concerns raised. The solution will also provide opportunity for less related conflicts in the future.
