Struggling with your presentation structure? Audience feedback is your secret weapon! After a session, ask for specific feedback on clarity and flow. Use surveys or quick polls. Review comments for common themes. Adjust your structure based on this input. For example, I always revise my sections if multiple attendees mention confusion or boredom. Implement these changes, and practice until it feels seamless.

One thing I have found very helpful is to make eye contact with my audience when possible. When I’m speaking on a larger stage and it’s hard to see the audiences faces I will pick out a few people that I can see and make sure to look into their eyes. I scan the crowd as much as possible, and watch their body language to show whether they are engaged, bored, interested, or otherwise. If people look bored, I can share a personal story, move around on the stage a bit, or throw in a joke if appropriate. If they look for this, also lets me to know to move on to my next topic since this one doesn’t seem to be holding their attention.

In my experience, I have found that it’s vital to identify the targeted audience and preparation and extensive research about the topic is paramount.

You firstly need to understand what the feedback is. You can understand the feedback through non-verbal signals from the audience. This includes paying attention to eye contact and facial expressions as this can indicate how engaged the audience were, during your speech. Also, pay close attention to the questions asked during the Q and A session as it could highlight which parts of your speech resonated most with your audience and which parts were clear or unclear. This immediate feedback, through the Q and A session can give you the chance to adjust and clarify your message through your response and gives you the chance to reflect, for next time, on how you can refine your structure to make your message even clearer.

Feedback is where most presenters fail or become the rare few GOATs of our generation. To be a great speaker, you must first become an outstanding listener. As feedback comes in (through Q&As, after event networking, surveys, etc) analyze and sort them into categories. These categories should include: A) Does this feedback apply to my objectives for this presentation? Yes or No B) If yes, where should I implement this to make the most sense? Structure is so important in a talk. Decide on a few key ideas or teaching points you want to convey, then build a story around each idea. If you present this way, your ideas are digestible and engaging enough to keep the interest and at the same time, you should be able to drive your point across without hitting people over their heads.

As a former international DJ I knew when I put on a record that people didn't like, public speaking is the same, you can feel when you are hitting the right note (or not), practicing with a smaller test group or even family members that will give you honest feedback is also a good move. Lastly believe in yourself, don't take yourself or your material too seriously, enjoy the feedback, always be grateful and congratulate yourself afterwards knowing you can always improve (as we all can)

Creating adaptations of my presentations is my FAVORITE part! Audience feedback, market trends, new research, new connections that help me to shift my lens - all of these moments are a reason to improve or change a presentation! I also love being transparent with the audience in saying something like, "You're the first group to hear this [story/analogy/experience], so please let me know if it resonates!".
