What a great day at Atlanta Public Schools BEST Academy! The Brothers of the 100 and the Emerging 100 of Atlanta have renewed our annual tradition of welcoming our young scholars out of their summer slumber back to the halls of BEST. This year is special as it marks the first year our very own Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. is honored with the renaming of BEST Academy to The B.E.S.T. Academy at The Thomas W. Dortch Jr. Institute. Attorney Ronnie Mabra, Jr., Esq.(Class of 2018) partnered with Kiss 104.1, bringing two SUVs full of backpacks to ensure our young men start the year off with bags full of supplies. Last but certainly not least, Mayor Andre Dickens showed us he's not just wearing the 100 pin—he’s all in! He, along with Greg Clay, MPA Clay from the Mayor's office, were there to greet the young men this morning! We're off to a great start! Today is a special day. I'm humbled by the shear thought standing next to Billye Aaron the wife and sould mate of MLB's venerable Henry "Hank" Aaron. Today the United States Postal Service along with the Atlanta Braves unveiled the commemorative Forever Stamp bearing the image of Brother Hank. I call him brother because he was an early member of the 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. I had the rare opportunity of meeting him several times during my tenure in Atlanta, GA. I'm more of a soccer guy than baseball but if I'm gonna have a team to root for it's the Atlanta Braves. I'm so excited to share the beginning of a new chapter. Today, I will complete my first week as Director of Advancement with the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, the nation's largest achievement-based and corporate-sponsored scholarship program. Since the inception of the Foundation and program in 1986, more than 6,900 scholar alumni have been impacted through the awarding of approximately $84 million dollars in scholarship funds. With the extraordinary support and investments from The Coca-Cola Company, The Coca-Cola Foundation, Coca-Cola Bottling Company UNITED, Inc., and various partners and supporters of Coca-Cola, the foundation has equipped countless Coca-Cola Scholars with the support and resources needed to be world changers in every corner of the globe, impacting education and business, nonprofits and the arts, healthcare, law, entertainment, sports, government, and more. I'm thrilled to join a phenomenal team under the leadership of Jane Hale Hopkins and I'm already so grateful for the warm welcome that has been extended by CCSF staff, alumni board members, and others associated with The Coca-Cola System. I thank God for this opportunity and for entrusting me to bring my passion for service to student and alumni leaders as well as my skills in development and communications to this space. I'm ecstatic to lead and implement a culture of giving and advancement that will produce even more visionary leaders ready to refresh the world. Also, I wish to thank the rest of my new team members - LaQuanda Prince, MBA, Jamie Williams, Ed.D., Ericia Ward, Carolyn Norton, Lauren O'Brien, and Jayla Brown - for matching my excitement and ensuring my first week went well! Lastly, I want to personally thank some people for their involvement in this process along the way. Thank you BoardWalk Consulting, Lysondra Somerville, and Michelle Hall for every effort during the screening, interview, and deliberation process. Thank you to dear friends and colleagues, Kirk Brown, Christen Wright, Diriki T. Geuka, Andrea N. Smith, Lauren Benike, and Michelle Folk for your reference endorsements!
