A Place Called Home supports the youth and families of South Central Los Angeles by providing a wide range of resources. Their holistic approach aims to deeply impact the community and empower the next generation to lead healthy, productive lives while making positive contributions locally and globally. Every day, A Place Called Home offers a safe, nurturing, and creative space for hundreds of youth aged 8-24. Through various programs in arts, athletics, education, and wellness, young individuals engage in activities like homework assistance, tutoring, art classes, dance, theater, music, and sports, among others. They also develop essential life skills through mentoring, social enterprise projects, and civic engagement initiatives. A Place Called Home emphasizes healthy living through its community gardens, well-equipped kitchen, fresh meal service, distribution events, and annual health clinics held on-site. This weekend was the Shaheen Scholarship Luncheon, a celebration of our 2024 Shaheen Scholars who are heading off to college this fall! 🎓✨ Together, Linda and David Shaheen, founders of the program, along with APCH staff and current and past Scholars came together to celebrate our 2024 cohort and their families. What does real #love look like? Last Friday, A Place Called Home hosted our annual Haus of Arts year-end showcase of our visual arts, digital media, and dance programs. More than 200 caregivers, siblings, and grandparents came to see their kiddos' creative works, and that art was incredible -- especially the dance performance. But what made me just swell was the sea of cell phones being held up to capture video and photos of their kids. They were just beaming with pride. Creating more #love in the world: that's what APCH does best.

Another incredible school visit from our #Hardie_Fellowship was to the two campuses of Da Vinci RISE High: A Place Called Home and Richstone both of which provide outstanding education for underserved youth. The campuses partnered and co-locate with community organisations A Place Called Home and Richstone Family Center to offer what we would consider true wrap around supports in a very genuine and collaborative partnership to build systems of care for students and families. At APCH our tour was led by the Principal, Erin Whalen and also the Manager of A Place Called Home Jewel Delegall and what struck us was they were clearly so connected and aligned it was hard to see where the work of the school ended and the work of APCH began.    Naomi Lara, Principal at Richstone organised a tour by Jamie and Jonny who spoke of the way the school and their group home had completely changed their life, and talked of dreams of opening a home for youth to partner with the school in the future. Both students were about to graduate and couldn't speak more highly of the support provided by the staff and the way the learning design helped them thrive. My key take aways: - Form partnerships, get clear on a shared vision and communicate. - Basic needs must be tended to before all else.  - Systemic silos can be broken through and genuine student centred partnerships can be created but there must be the resource and shared purpose. Department for Education, Children and Young People has a huge opportunity with our recent merger to realise this (happy to chat with you about this Tim Bullard 😊)! - Young people are incredible.  Emma Aorangi and I want to apologise for how embarassingly excited we were about seeing the yellow school bus and also give a special shout out to Jimmy and Jamie (pictured) for the best student led tour!
