We are honored to be a part of this heartfelt tribute to Gary Szalka, AKA, the “Dean of Baseball”. His life is woven with threads of family, community, and a deep love for the game. After his promising baseball career was interrupted by the Vietnam War, Gary dedicated 37 years to coaching young athletes at Melvindale High School and Trenton, Michigan community baseball alongside his sons, Todd and Marc. His legacy lives on through the generations of players he’s impacted, and now, as he battles Parkinson’s, his family stands by his side. In creating a Legacy project that was unique to Gary and his family, AccentCare hospice volunteer seamstress Shirley Hesselrode crafted a quilt made from Gary’s old jerseys. The quilt, filled with memories from decades of coaching, was presented to Gary surrounded by his family, including his four grandsons. “This quilt is beyond anything I dreamed of,” said Gary’s wife Pam. “It will be a constant comfort to us, a symbol of Gary’s incredible legacy.” The quilt even holds extra meaning for Shirley, as Gary happened to coach two of her grandsons. “I feel blessed to create these legacy items that bring comfort to families,” she says. Yesterday, I had the incredible opportunity to share the stage with some of our community's most distinguished leaders and senior care experts. Together, we educated the community on the various options, layers, and complexities involved in navigating the aging process, along with the resources available during each stage of life. A heartfelt thank you to Frankie Parrott for inviting me to speak—it was an honor to collaborate with Kathy Goforth from LifeCare, Beth Baxter, and Frankie Parrott from Everlan and Dominion senior living communities. I was grateful for the chance to share how AccentCare Personal Care Services can make a meaningful impact.

Beautiful moments like this can make the harder ones worth it, especially for our volunteers. Our legacy volunteers devote time to putting love into every craft (in this case, stitch) they execute to capture a patient’s unique essence. Legacy work is work from the heart. Meet Gail. She was overwhelmed with joy as we gifted her teddy bears made from her loved one’s favorite t-shirts. These bears allow Gail to keep her loved one’s memories close to her heart.
