Faced with instability risks at a Mine, we stepped in to stabilize two failing shotcrete high walls and secure a critical area near a substation. Large tension cracks signaled potential block failures, demanding expert intervention and tailored solutions. Our plan involved installing two rows of anchors (190 LF total) within and below the coal seam. We reinforced those sections with walers, drain strips, and fiber-reinforced shotcrete to support large blocks and prevent erosion, focusing coverage within 25 feet of the substation. We also performed safety scaling to remove smaller unstable blocks and installed active rock anchors for enhanced stability. This approach provided long-term protection for the mine’s infrastructure.

Along a crucial stretch of HWY 49, multiple slope failures threatened the roadway and required urgent remediation. We were called in to restore stability and ensure long-term safety. The solution included installing 30,000 square feet of anchored mesh and 12,000 square feet of wire mesh drapery to protect the slopes. Additionally, 500 soil nails were strategically placed to reinforce the slopes, anchoring them securely. This project not only restored stability but also demonstrated our expertise in delivering effective solutions for challenging geohazard conditions, keeping vital infrastructure safe and operational.

The owner of a retail banking facility sought a contractor to remediate their failing 320-ft long by a 22-ft high segmented retaining wall. Due to tight environmental permit restrictions, the wall footprint could not be extended outward. Additionally, bearing conditions at the base of the wall were less than anticipated based on the boring information. Fortunately, we utilized our design-build capabilities to quickly respond to the changed conditions by designing a #micropile and cap system without impacting the project schedule. We were glad to deliver on this project despite difficult access and undocumented subsurface conditions. The resulting repair will serve the client well for years to come.
