We must drastically reduce the amount of PFAS in the environment by minimizing it in products 🛍️, but to truly end the PFAS cycle, we must look to PFAS destruction technologies. Read more: Over 1,600 gallons of firefighting foam containing hazardous PFAS chemicals spilled at the former Brunswick Naval Air Base in Maine due to a malfunction in the fire suppression system. The foam, known for its use in smothering jet fuel fires ✈️, entered the sewer and stormwater systems, spreading to nearby areas and even going airborne. Cleanup efforts by the Maine DEP are underway, but concerns remain about the long-term environmental impact, as these chemicals are nearly indestructible and linked to serious health risks 🚨. The incident adds to the already significant PFAS contamination in the area.

🎉 Congrats to the East Providence Fire Dept for going #PFAS-free! 🚒🔥 The City Council recently voted to authorize the City of East Providence, Rhode Island and City of East Providence Mayor’s Office, Mayor Roberto L. DaSilva, to purchase new turnout gear for the East Providence Fire Department, making it the first department in the state to wear fire equipment without the use of polyfluoroalkyl substances. 👏

Finally Part 4 of the University of Notre Dame #PFAS series. WE HAVE A #RESPONSIBILITY. Daniele Miranda, assistant research professor at Notre Dame, leads a team studying PFAS contamination in Indiana's waterways, particularly focusing on underserved communities. Funded by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, her research tracks PFAS concentrations in various streams flowing into Lake Michigan. The team collects water and sediment samples to identify contamination hotspots, aiming to raise public awareness and inform local residents about potential health risks from consuming contaminated fish. Collaborations with other experts, like Gary Lamberti and Michael Pfrender, extend the study to examine PFAS's genetic impacts on aquatic organisms, highlighting the urgent need for education, action, and policy change to address this pervasive environmental issue.

It brings the topic of PFAS and proper PFAS management to the public eye once more: New research has identified that landfills in the U.S. are not only a significant source of PFAS contamination in groundwater but also release these toxic "forever chemicals" into the air. PFAS, which are difficult to destroy, become concentrated in landfill gas treatment systems and may be released into the environment, posing an additional and less understood environmental threat.
