From Chicago to beyond Earth’s atmosphere, Dr. Mae Jemison has shown us that anything is possible if you set your mind to it! ✨ 32 years ago today, on 9/12/92, Dr. Jemison traveled to space on the space shuttle Endeavour, becoming the first African-American woman in space. 🚀 #AdlerPlanetarium #WomenInSTEM

Über uns
The Adler Planetarium connects people to the universe and each other. Whether it is introducing a guest to the Ring Nebula, a neighborhood school to a community partner, a research team to a network of citizen scientists, or one staff member to another, the Adler’s focus on meaningful connections dates back nearly a century. The museum typically hosts more than half a million visitors each year and reaches millions more through youth STEAM programs, neighborhood skywatching events, people-powered research, and other outreach efforts. Today, the Adler is bringing our unique approach—scientific exploration rooted in community and connection—to guests from around the world who can enjoy the digital Adler from their own homes, libraries, schools or offices. With the Adler’s support, people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities gain the confidence to explore their universe together and return to their communities ready to think critically and creatively about any challenge that comes their way. Keep looking up. We’re looking up with you.

BIG NEWS, STARGAZERS! This year’s harvest Moon is going to be extra special—it will be partially eclipsed! Here’s what you need to know: 🍁 The harvest Moon is the full Moon that falls closest to the autumnal equinox. This year, it rises on 9/17! 🌔 The harvest Moon will be partially eclipsed beginning at 9:12 pm CDT. 🌎 As this is a partial eclipse, don’t expect to see a fully covered, dark red Moon like during a total lunar eclipse. Instead, 10% of the Moon (the top sliver) will be covered by the Earth’s shadow, making it appear slightly darker. 🌕 The partial eclipse will reach maximum coverage at 9:45 pm and conclude by 10:15 pm. ⭐ BONUS! The harvest Moon is also a supermoon, meaning the Moon will be closer to Earth than usual in its orbit. It may appear slightly brighter and/or bigger in our night sky. Don’t miss out on this spectacular welcome into the autumn season! ✨ #AdlerPlanetarium #LunarEclipse #Astronomy

We’ve all been there, right? 🤔 This eclipseometer from the 1680s was used to effectively predict lunar and solar eclipses for 200 years! But this isn’t a tool of magic or divination, rather, it’s a mathematical tool made by understanding how the Moon, Earth, and Sun move in space. 🌕 🌎 ☀️ Even though its predictive tools ended in the 1800s and it couldn’t predict the partial lunar eclipse coming in September 2024, we’re still obsessed with this beautiful—and useful—piece! 🥰 #AdlerPlanetarium #Collections #LunarEclipse

The cosmos are kicking off the coziest season on Earth with all sorts of celestial treats! Check out some of this month’s sky observing highlights: 🍂 The harvest supermoon this month rises on 9/17, marking mid autumn in many parts of the world. 🌕 A partial lunar eclipse also joins the mid-autumn party, eclipsing around 10% of the harvest supermoon! 🌇The autumn equinox arrives on 9/22, bringing with it the phenomenon known as Chicagohenge from 9/19–9/22. 🪐 Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn will all be visible throughout September! "You know, as a meteorologist, I've always told folks that I look up through the first 10 to 12 miles of our atmosphere, but that the astronomers, like those here at Adler Planetarium, take over after that and look at the vast expanse that is our universe." 💛 Now through September 5, Tom Skilling's Great Space Challenge is helping us raise $35,000 in support of our museum programming. Help us reach our goal: https://lnkd.in/g52ZHDUk #AdlerPlanetarium #Chicago #TomSkilling #ChicagoNonProfit
