One of the best part of my job is co-teaching and being class mentor for the AFIT CE School’s WENG 520 Comprehensive Planning. This year’s class was a new pivot to previous classes fully employing the DAF’s digital planning tool, the Comprehensive Planning Platform. It was so fun to see how this tool can facilitate developing and documenting District Plans. The students were able to ‘war-gaming’ some future scenarios for the East Airfield Area, giving Wright-Patterson leadership some decision support tools for the future. **Footnote: Excited to have many of the architectural PAQ interns in the class. Protect Land and Water-Sustain the Mission! This month, our environmental team instructed the first known in the field training on erosion control methods in all the DoD (prove us wrong!). Students were instructed in a wide range of filtration, stabilization, water conveyance, sediment trapping, and dewatering techniques from our water management expert-Joe DiMisa. Following the classroom instruction, students were instructed on installing biodegradable coconut fiber matting and socks as well as traditional silt fence at an eroded site on Naval Construction Battalion Center-Gulfport. Students learned the importance of erosion control to conserve our military lands for mission purposes.

Mr. Craig DeBeni named Outstanding Civilian of the Year at Air Force level! This past week our own Craig DeBeni was selected as the winner of the 2023 Air Force Association Lisa S. Disbrow Outstanding Civilian of the Year Award at the Air Force Level! During this past year he developed and instituted a control systems cyber course worth $1.2 million for Civil Engineers across the enterprise. He was also selected as a flight commander for our WMGT 101 Air Force Civil Engineer Basic Course as one of the first civilians in over 12 years! Congrats to Craig DeBeni on this incredible achievement!

Week 9 of MGT 101 is over and CRISIS week is upon us! On Thursday, our best beddown practicum project teams presented to the 88 ABW/CC and the AU Det 1/CC. Then it was time to clean up The Civil Engineer School, pack A and C bags, hop on a plane, and head to Tyndall! Graduation is fast approaching (Friday, 07 June). Stay tuned for the official invite!

CE School Environmental Team Goes Worldwide! This spring, the CE School held two highly relevant and effective environmental courses at DAF overseas bases. At Ramstein AB, Rick Kappel delivered the Hazmat/Hazwaste combined course to 42 students from 11 bases in USAFE. Meanwhile, Tay Johannes and Joe DiMisa delivered the Environmental Management System Auditing course to 11 students from 7 bases in PACAF at Osan AB. Meeting students where they are and on their time schedule makes for successful learning! Now to recover from the jet lag!

Week 8 of MGT 101 is coming to a close! Students have been working diligently on their capstone beddown projects and preparing to deploy to CRISIS down at Tyndall AFB at the end of next week. Wish them luck in the last couple weeks of the course! Stay tuned for the graduation invitation.
