The Africa Program works to address the most critical issues facing Africa and U.S.-Africa relations, build mutually beneficial U.S.–Africa relations, and enhance knowledge and understanding about Africa in the United States. The Program achieves its mission through in-depth research and analyses, including our blog Africa Up Close, public discussion, working groups, and briefings that bring together policymakers, practitioners, and subject matter experts to analyze and offer practical options for tackling key challenges in Africa and in U.S.-Africa relations. The Africa Program focuses on four core issues: • Good governance and leadership • Conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and security • Trade, investment, and sustainable development • Africa’s evolving role in the global arena The program also maintains a cross-cutting focus on the roles of women, youth, and technology.

Director, Africa Program at The Wilson Center

#ICYMI - On August 6, the Wilson Center Africa Program launched the African Leadership Perspective Series. It was an honor to welcome H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo, Fmr. President of #Nigeria as the inaugural speaker. This series invites African public figures and former African heads of state to The Wilson Center to share their perspectives on Africa’s leadership role in the evolving #global arena. H.E. Olusegun Obasanjo’s depth of wisdom, honesty, and wit were on point. He reflected on the past and current state of #leadership in Africa and shared lessons for strengthening US-Africa partnerships. The discussion covered a broad range of topics including transformational leadership, #economic integration, unconstitutional changes of government, and addressing the #governance deficit in Africa.   Some key takeaways from the discussion ▪ It is important for leaders to work as a collective – we see progress when African leaders across countries work together.   ▪ There are specific countries in #Africa that MUST play a leadership role to promote progress on the continent. He identified Nigeria as one of these countries. ▪ The #AfCFTA is a commendable African-led initiative. If implemented well, economic integration could serve as a precursor to political integration. ▪ The African continent needs to have at least 15-20 countries that can serve as anchors across the different regions. This point needs to be explored further. We could have easily spent hours in conversation with him. We look forward to hosting him again, as well as welcoming other leaders as part of the African Leadership Perspective series. Watch the conversation here 👉🏽 https://shorturl.at/ZOecj

Director, Africa Program at The Wilson Center

On July 24, The Wilson Center Africa Program hosted the Civil Society and Organized Labor Forum, as part of the 21st African Growth and Opportunities Act (#AGOA) Forum. It was a pleasure to welcome representatives from civil society, labor unions, and small businesses to The Wilson Center for discussions on AGOA implementation and renewal. We were pleased to also host a networking event alongside for African women-owned small businesses.   Thanks to US Trade Representative, Amb. Katherine Tai for her leadership on AGOA and for emphasizing the importance of using data to inform decisions, as well as welcoming insights from those who have not been part of these discussions.  Also, thanks to USAID Assistant Administrator, Africa Bureau, Dr. Monde Muyangwa for reflecting on the importance of learning lessons from the past two decades of AGOA implementation and prioritizing human and labor rights going forward. The event aimed to move the understanding of AGOA from the abstract to focusing on the impact that AGOA has on the everyday lives of citizens and businesses in #Africa and in the US. The speakers explored key issues on AGOA implementation, renewal, and enhancement as it pertains to upholding human rights; promoting a sustainable and inclusive workforce; and creating enabling environments for small and medium sized businesses.   Many of the speakers emphasized that more needs to be done to increase awareness about AGOA and #AfCFTA among stakeholders, especially youth, but they also stressed the urgency of AGOA renewal. There were many important points raised during the conversation. #ICYMI you can watch a recording of the event in English and French translation 👉🏽 https://shorturl.at/8aP5z The Wilson Center Africa Program was also invited to attend the official AGOA Ministerial on July 25 -26, where alongside representatives from civil society and organized labor, we provided the readout from the Civil Society and Organized Labor Forum to African trade ministers and senior U.S and African government officials. It was wonderful to hear consistent reassurances across the board about the importance of AGOA. With the program set to expire in September 2025, a clear timeline of action on AGOA renewal could be the greatest reassurance for stakeholders.    Thanks to Freedom House, Solidarity Center, AFL-CIO, Fred Oladeinde - Chair, AGOA Civil Society Organization Network, Shona Carter, Witney Schneidman, wonderful partners from the US interagency (State Department, USTR, and USAID), amazing speakers, and awesome Wilson Center colleagues.  It was a pleasure working with all of you.   Interested in learning more about AGOA?
