🌡️🌳 Houston’s #ExtremeHeat hits some neighborhoods harder than others. Luckily, Houston, TX is working hard to ensure everyone benefits from trees: Houston has pledged to plant 4.6 million new trees by 2030 as a part of the 1t.org US Chapter community. With support from Salesforce, American Forests supported Houston in becoming the largest city to date to make a 1t.org US pledge. As researchers map out the hottest spots in the city, American Forests is committed to ensuring everyone has access to the cooling and health benefits that trees provide. I'm proud to join with noted author Nadina Galle to highlight the vital role of natural cooling from trees in keeping people physically active and healthy during the hotter months. The heat season is expanding across the calendar, fueled by #ClimateChange, and is getting more intense with each passing year. While the headlines all go to heat-related deaths, we also need attention to more subtle health impacts from heat exposure like reduced physical activity. We can fight back against #ExtremeHeat by systematically bringing natural cooling from trees 🌳 to recreation areas of all kinds--including the running paths that are so close to my own heart. In the process we must assure that the climate-safe places we create to walk, run, bike, kick a ball, climb a jungle gym, or whatever you and your family love to do are equitably distributed across our cities. Because we need climate-safe outdoor recreation for all to have #HealthEquity and climate justice, and today heat exposure is uneven across our cities thanks to factors such as inequitable tree cover tracking along lines of income and race. We will definitely need to focus these climate-safe recreation efforts more in some neighborhoods compared to others. Thanks in advance for giving us a read! A brilliant brand move. By removing the tree from their iconic logo, REI is asking their followers...where would we be without trees? A longtime partner and supporter of American Forests, REI is highlighting the issue of #TreeEquity by drawing attention to the fact that not everyone has the same access to trees and green spaces. In fact, U.S. neighborhoods with the highest poverty rates have on average 38% less tree cover than wealthier areas, according to American Forests' Tree Equity Score. Learn more at treeequityscore.org
