Are all cells in a bacterial population identical? When it comes to antibiotic resistance, the answer is a clinically unfortunate "no." Heteroresistance occurs when some bacteria in a population are susceptible to an antibiotic while others are resistant. How does it develop, and how can scientists tackle this clinical conundrum? ASM thanks Representative Robert Garcia and Representative Don Bacon for introducing the Surveilling Effluent Water for Epidemic Response (SEWER) Act (H.R. 9008). If passed, the bill would authorize funding for the National Wastewater Surveillance System to monitor and detect the spread of infectious disease outbreaks. “The National Wastewater Surveillance System is a proven tool to efficiently detect and support state and local responses to outbreaks that endanger public health,” said Amalia Corby, ASM Director of Federal Affairs.
