“Sleep apnea affects millions and spares no one––even elite athletes at the top of their game,” says our Senior Vice President of Clinical Development, John Cronin, MD #Paris2024 Swedish handball star Jim Gottfridsson is no exception. Like many living with obstructive #SleepApnea (OSA), he assumed his extreme fatigue was because of parenthood and his profession. However, with encouragement from his wife, he underwent a sleep analysis that resulted in an #OSA diagnosis.  More awareness of the symptoms of OSA is imperative so people can be accurately diagnosed and treated. Many people living with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) delay seeking out diagnosis and treatment for a variety of reasons, from lack of awareness to low acceptance of current treatment options, with at least 80% of people with OSA remaining undiagnosed.    To address this concerning public health gap, Project Sleep has launched the #SleepApneaSquad, a new educational initiative backed by leading clinicians and advocates to help people navigate the complex OSA journey.  We’re thrilled to support this much needed program which will help support unmet needs in the OSA community. Sleep apnea is a common but serious sleep disorder. The disorder is caused by repetitive periods when airflow is interrupted during sleep due to a narrowing or closure to the throat. A complete blockage of airflow is an apnea, and a partial interruption is a hypopnea. Each apnea or hypopnea can result in drops in oxygen levels and brief awakenings or sleep disturbances.
