In the fall of 1990, we displayed these drawings alongside a mock-up of our first aircraft, the autonomous Perseus proof-of-concept, at NASA's Ames Research Center. The aircraft was designed for NASA's Environmental Research Aircraft and Sensor Technology (ERAST) program to develop cost-effective UAVs capable of performing long-duration science missions at altitudes above 60,000 feet. PAV accelerated innovation and advanced the development of urban air mobility. The workshop gathered a distinguished group of industry and academic leaders, and our team played a key role in facilitating discussions on the role of the AIAA community in creating a unified vision for sustainable flight. Participants discussed critical challenges in the industry and reached a consensus on several strategic priorities. In 2014, Aurora debuted the Autonomous Aerial Utility System (AACUS), which transforms a manned helicopter into an autonomous aircraft with the ability to deliver cargo safely, efficiently, and rapidly. A US Office of Naval Research flight demonstration was completed in February 2014 using a Boeing H-6U Little Bird helicopter. In 2018, AACUS, on a UH-1 helicopter, successfully delivered cargo to US Marines in the Integrated Training Exercise at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms. The AACUS autonomous helicopter team received the 2018 Howard Hughes Award, presented for outstanding improvement in fundamental vertical flight technology. Aurora’s adaptive control architecture is being tested on 1.5-meter-long, uncrewed surface vessels in Boston’s Charles River. https://lnkd.in/e9BubA3i Adaptive control enables vehicles to adapt their control laws in real time and maintain safe operation in unpredicted conditions. The algorithms continuously improve performance and safety, and the vessel acts more reliably, which builds trust with human operators and improves the performance of the human-machine team. As part of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) LINC program, the Aurora and MIT team will perform at four demonstration events, one approximately every six months, beginning later this year. “Together, we are advancing technology that can increase efficiency and safety of operations for land, air, and sea vehicles,” said Aurora’s CTO Graham Drozeski.
