Black Girls Do STEM partnered with Top Tutors for Us to offer our students 10 weeks of comprehensive small group tutoring with a Top Tutor that looked like them! The girls were able to engage in test taking strategy, community building, and robust academic skill building all to improve thier ACT test scores. Our girls took the ACT test on September 14th and we are certain that they improve their scores and be well on their way to achieve the college acceptance and scholarships of their dreams. As we know standardized test preparation raised scores on avergae 3-4 points and minoriteis and lower income groups often struggle to afford robust test preparation for their students. Therefore, Black Girls Do STEM see's this as an essential support service to lower our girls student debt and families contributions by raising their scores and opportunities for scholarship and college acceptance. This is one of the many services we offer that is elevating equity and advacing access to Black girls in our St. Louis region. How can you help us DO THE WORK? Make a doantion today, partner with us, and finally register for our upcoming end of year showcase and learning about the many ways we are building confidence and comunity through culture and curiosity! We are always excited to partner on the best services for our students that elevates equity and advance their access to needed resources to excel in their post secondary careers and personal and professional lives! Thank you to Top Tutors for Us and we look forward to a continued partnership. #standardizedtest are not equitable and present bias as many youth are not able to afford necessary test preparation to do well on this test. We at Black Girls Do STEM believe in aptitude assessments to help guide unreprespented youth to areas of stem suited for their unique perspectives, style of learning and areas of interest. Nonetheless, until we can change the game we must equip our girls to play it giving them as much advantage as others with personal resources and privileges. #BGDSTEM #Blacktutorsmatter #Equity #Communtiy #Culture

“As a nation, it is essential that we continue to explore the “who”: Who are the individuals investigating the tenuous balance between health and disease? Who are the people paradoxically hunting for specificity (sometimes down to a single base pair of DNA), all while keeping an eye out for big-picture trends (such as health disparities in entire populations). Who are the investigators who borrow dogmas, frameworks, and theories from a vast array of fields — physical sciences, public health, computer science, biological sciences, engineering, and behavioral health — to drive scientific research forward?” Read more to find out why the who matters. Articles like this validate our why. Black Girls Do STEM is committed to diversifying STEM. https://lnkd.in/g-qrzE7p #BGDSTEM #diversifyinnovation #cultivatecuriousity #createcommunity

“A first-of-its-kind digital tool focused on Black women and data on their contributions to the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) field is coming to Spelman College. The tool, made possible by a generous donation from Google.com, began with a conversation held by the Spelman’s Center of Excellence leadership advisory board over two years ago. When researchers realized the lack of data while attempting to champion the contributions of Black women across various STEM fields, they took matters into their own hands, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.” Spelman College continues to make great strides in their STEM programs, catapulting young Black women into diverse STEM careers.
