AESP Summer Con’s opening session in Canada last week discussed recent findings of Bidgely and AESP’s State of Utility AI Report 💡 🔎 What we found: The rapidly advancing capabilities of artificial intelligence (#AI) are perfectly aligned with the industry’s need to accelerate innovation, manage transportation electrification loads, improve supply and demand predictions, maximize energy efficiency, and shift peak consumption. Key takeaways from the survey included identifying the following challenges: 1️⃣ The Utility Industry is in Early Stages of AI Adoption: The survey reveals that 57% of utilities are "Spectators" still observing AI trends, while 44% are "Pathfinders" initiating their AI journey. None have reached the "Architect" or "Champion" stages. 2️⃣ Regulatory and Talent Challenges: Seventy percent of respondents reported that their regulators are either unfamiliar or indifferent about AI’s potential. Additionally, more than half of respondents judged their AI talent to be "significantly lacking." 3️⃣ Importance of Data-Driven Approaches: As grid complexity increases with the rise of renewables and electric vehicles, utilities must adopt data-driven approaches to engage new-age customers and maintain grid infrastructure. 4️⃣ Focus on Customer Experience and Grid Management: Current AI efforts in utilities are focused on improving customer experience (self-service and call center support) and addressing grid stability concerns (smarter grid infrastructure planning and demand response).
