The BioQUEST Curriculum Consortium is a community of scientists, teachers and learners who are interested in promoting biology education that reflects realistic scientific practices. The BioQUEST “3P’s” philosophy engages students in problem posing, problem solving and peer persuasion. This philosophy aligns well with education research that has found an emphasis on student centered learning, active and inquiry based learning, research experiences, and reflective writing to be effective educational practices. BioQUEST has shared this philosophy with thousands of college and high school faculty over the past 31 years, across the US and internationally. BioQUEST has a rich history of developing software, computer simulations, and models as well as curriculum materials, with a continuing emphasis on quantitative reasoning and developing scientific research skills. Recent BioQUEST projects have taken a turn toward implementing effective evidence based pedagogical approaches largely through professional development activities. Currently, BioQUEST is part of the QUBES project, a project designed to enhance quantitative biology education. BioQUEST will play a key role in the innovative virtual faculty learning communities developed to increase the adoption and implementation of evidence based pedagogies. Over the years, BioQUEST has offered professional development workshops for faculty at various scientific and education conferences around the country and internationally, as well as specialized workshops related to grants or sponsored by other organizations. We partner with a variety of professional societies to provide workshops for their members. One of our strengths is our ability to partner with different organizations and help them achieve their educational goals. The list of BioQUEST projects demonstrates this collaborative approach and the success of BioQUEST in building valuable community based projects (http://bioquest.org/projects/).

Throwback to last week! We love a good "matchy matchy" t-shirt photo. We are energized about the feedback received throughout the week from our participants. Major themes include: ➡ The online experience allowed for individual flexibility throughout the week. ➡ Participants could personalize their own schedule so that they can maximize the week in between their own weekly activities. ➡ The information shared was insightful and the organization of the week helped to keep the busy week manageable. ➡ Even with the entirely virtual experience, there was no moment too short of having an interactive experience every day. Participants: the BIOME 2024 evaluation is live and linked on the schedule page. If you have not done so already, please fill out the form and provide us with any feedback on the planning and organization of the week. We need your insights to keep growing and improving. Thank you!

OCELOTS FMN has just wrapped up its application process! There are a few abbreviations involved to explain what that means, so let’s get started— OCELOTS stands for Online Content for Experiential Learning of Tropical Systems. They are a BIOQUEST CURRICULUM CONSORTIUM project which spreads accessible online sustainability education in a variety of ways— one of which being their FMN! FMN stands for Faculty Mentoring Network. It’s a program run by OCELOTS which gathers educators in order to assist them with incorporating tropical ecology modules based on actual research into their undergraduate life science courses. While their program for this fall has already finished its application process, a new FMN is run each year, so make sure to check their site and this page, since we’re sure to post about it! This year’s FMN also includes possible travel/registration support to attend the ESA Annual Meeting, which we spoke about in our last post. Check out OCELOTS FMN: https://lnkd.in/e_CsXjhb

Earlier this August, the ESA annual meeting took place, with members of Gala joining in! Hosted in a different city each year, the ESA annual meeting serves as a forum and gathering place for ecologists. Since 1915, it has served as a nexus for ideas in environmental science. Just one example of the kind of content which is presented at the meeting is 4DEE’s teaching framework, which examines how designing courses that integrate the full scope of ecological science can demonstrate its relevance to society. Another is OCELOTS, which presented on internationalizing courses via using online modules, like those found on Gala and BIOQUEST CURRICULUM CONSORTIUM’s QUBES platform. Gala is, of course, very interested in that topic, so we had to attend! Here’s us hanging out with OCELOTS! Tune in next week, where we’ll be discussing how you can get yourself to the ESA annual meeting next year, and an amazing mentoring network at the same time!
