The mission of the Buffalo Urban League is . . . To empower African Americans, other minorities and disadvantaged individuals to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights. This Mission is driven by the National Urban League’s Mission and empowers those who are striving toward the mainstream to achieve economic self-reliance and to enjoy their rights as citizens under the law. Both the Buffalo and National Urban League’s Mission support the following fiveobjectives: Education and Youth Empowerment ensures the education of all children by providing access to early childhood literacy, after-care programs and college scholarships. Economic Empowerment invests in the financial literacy and employability of adults through job training, homeownership and entrepreneurship. Health and Quality of Life Empowerment promotes community wellness through a focus on prevention, including fitness, healthy eating and access to affordable healthcare. Civic Engagement and Leadership Empowerment encourages all people to take an active role to improve quality of life through participation in community service projects and public policy initiatives. Civil Rights and Racial Justice Empowerment guarantees equal participation in all facets of American society through proactive public policies and community-based programs.

#DIDYOUKNOW The right to cast our votes and make our voices heard in how we are governed is perhaps the most American of all rights. However, that right for Black Americans had been under attack ever for a century and a half. The #VotingRightsAct of 1965 was signed on this day 59 years ago. Called "the single most effective piece of civil rights legislation ever passed by Congress" by the Department of Justice, this landmark legislation meant Black people could vote without harassment, intimidation, rigged “tests" or violence. Black people registered en masse. But our votes are extremely powerful, which is why the attacks on them continue. In a 2013 Supreme Court decision, the VRA was gutted, opening the door to hundreds of laws to suppress votes across the country. Our lives, freedom and hope for the future are all on the line with our votes in this fall's elections. It's time to #reclaimyourvote. It's time to reclaim all of it. These rights are yours. #votingrights #govote #registertovote #rockthevote #whenweallvote #blackvotersmatter
