We're breaking the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through service and education.

Über uns

Across the globe, buildOn’s goal is to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and low expectations through service and education. In the U.S., buildOn empowers youth to transform their neighborhoods through intensive community service and to change the world by building schools in some of the economically poorest countries on the planet. Internationally, buildOn is breaking ground on a new school every two days in Burkina Faso, Haiti, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Nepal, Senegal, Malawi, and Mali. Our students have contributed over 2.5 million hours of service in the U.S., and have helped build more than 2,600 schools around the world. For more information, visit buildon.org.

Did you know that in many states you can pre-register to vote as young as 16 years old? Part of our Service Learning Program is focused on teaching our students to meet the moment. buildOn students learn how to reflect on the difficulties their regions are facing and how they can make a difference. Civic engagement empowers our students to become the future leaders of tomorrow! Look out for the work our students will be doing on the ground through November and don’t forget to get registered!

An educated life is a better life for everyone. Children born to literate mothers are 50% more likely to survive past age 5 than those whose mothers cannot read. At buildOn, we're committed to making sure everyone gets a chance to get an education–not just for their own sakes, but for generations to come. With every school we build, every adult we educate, and every child we get back in the classroom, we get closer to reaching that goal. Support our work: https://ow.ly/gnXQ50Tpta2

Disruptions in access to education are not just systemic, they’re often situational as well. Some of our students have a long trip ahead of them every morning just to make it to school. Let’s show them that they’re not in this alone! Will you join us? Click here to create your fundraising page and get started: https://ow.ly/gGUG50TmoJo We’ll be with you every step of the way. 😉🧡

As fall arrives in the Motor City, we caught up with Detroit Engagement Specialist Rebekah Long! 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗢𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲?  My favorite buildOn service experience was going on Trek to break ground on a new school in Guatemala. This was a fantastic experience for staff, students, and community members because it allowed us to understand the intricate process of building a school and the importance of education. I could fully immerse myself in the community by staying with a hospitable and loving host family, practicing my Spanish, and unplugging from social media. I loved seeing that I was truly making a difference by helping to build an institution of education for their community. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗢𝗻? What I like most is that I get to meet amazing people. From the students at my high school and across the nation to my coworkers in various regions, I am in a flexible role that allows me to connect with people who have a shared love for service and altruism. I love being able to share the importance of giving back and also doing community service frequently. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗢𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆? My favorite buildOn memory has to be Trek! It truly showed me how impactful buildOn is around the world and how when people come together to accomplish a goal, it will get done. It also showed me the importance of building global communities. I loved traveling with students, assisting them, and working alongside them. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗢𝗻’𝘀 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗼 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁? buildOn’s mission is important because it empowers people worldwide to work together to leave a legacy greater than we could individually. buildOn is committed to ending poverty and illiteracy by establishing schools alongside communities and coordinating opportunities for students in the United States to do service learning.

“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” –Benjamin Franklin We couldn’t agree more! At buildOn, we’re investing in knowledge every day. We've seen firsthand how education can transform lives and communities: In countries with high rates of poverty and illiteracy, we've partnered with community members to build over 2,600 schools, providing access to education for thousands of children who previously had none. In the U.S., our Service Learning Program has empowered students to become leaders through service, with many going on to be first-generation college students. Globally, we've helped tens of thousands of adults learn to read and write and drive positive change in their communities. The interest on our investment? Empowered youth, stronger communities, and a more equitable world. Invest in knowledge yourself by donating to support our work: https://ow.ly/7NGa50Tkjks

“Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman, and child can realize his or her full potential.” – Kofi Annan Powerful words. For this year’s International Literacy Day, we want to remind you that being able to read this message alone is a privilege than many people across the world do not share. We partner with communities in low-income countries that are not just facing a crisis of education—they are facing a crisis of hope. Help us to ignite a more equitable future. Build hope with us: https://ow.ly/JBPf50Tgt9j
