Builds Bio+ reposted this
Last angle of the UK golden triangle, on the 3rd day of the Builds Bio+ life science tour, we visited Oxford, home to the University of Oxford, #1 nationally for spinouts. Similar to London and Cambridge, we are observing similar trends in real estate investment and mechanisms in fostering innovation ecosystems, but perhaps at slightly smaller scale than the other 2. So instead of discussing my takeaways on the Oxford ecosystem, here are my overall summary on the UK life sciences golden triangle: 🌱 Ambitious growth plans: ambitious growth plans, “doubling the size of science parks” etc, are heard across the 3 cities. According to Gerald Eve’s Labtrack report, 13.1m sq ft of lab space are in the pipeline. A lot of investment has gone into making space and infrastructure for life sciences both just in new buildings and lab space, but also train stations and travel networks 🌳 Sustainability and building positive human future at the heart of it all: it is great to see how much emphasis and thought given to sustainability. Building forever buildings, design considerations around operations and supply chains, biophilic designs, how to enable users to get to work by bike/ public transport instead of cars etc. it was wonderful meeting so many passionate people who care deeply about fostering the right ecosystem, and the important science that solves the world’s biggest problems. 🧑🧑🧒🧒 Making sure the local communities are on board and benefit from the ecosystem as well: large windows for “science on display”, community spaces for local residents to enjoy, incubators that encourage local communities to become entrepreneurs. How these new spaces contribute to the local community and wider economy such that everyone thrives is hugely important. Some final reflections: 🏥 With a strong life sciences research pipeline, do we have enough infrastructure in our already resource-constrained hospitals to support clinical trials? Do we have the right environment (including clinical trials and reimbursement) for the commercialisation lifecycle of life sciences products? 🇬🇧 UK is not just the research triangle and we have great research institutions in other regions such as Manchester and Newscastle etc, how do we foster more collaboration across clusters? 🧁 We have all the ingredients: world leading universities and institutions, talent, infrastructure and space, funding and professional services and community support. But are they in the right proportion to bake a good cake? Are we missing a master baker?🧑🍳 Thank you again to the many individuals and organisations that curated such an amazing experience: Builds Bio+, Ryan Matenchuk, Nancy J Kelley, Nick Pell, Faaiza Lalji, SC1 London Life Sciences Innovation District, Joseph Casey, The Francis Crick Institute, Cambridge Science Park, Jane Hutchins, Cambridge Biomedical Campus, Alison Wring, ARC Oxford #innovation #lifesciences #PAConsulting
