In the 2021-22 school year, only 1 in 3 fourth graders in the U.S. was reading at grade level, only 1 in 4 eighth graders was proficient in math, and rates of chronic absence tripled. Here is how philanthropy can help. -Partner with schools and communities to provide the wraparound support kids need to attend school regularly. -Invest in practical solutions to improve attendance and well-being (ex. funding more school buses can help get kids to school every day). -Enhance and expand in-person tutoring programs to help students catch up. -Support community schools—public schools designed to provide students and their families with academic, social, and health services. -Collect, analyze, and provide schools with robust, real-time data to know how many students are struggling, and which interventions are most effective. Lisa Hamilton, president and CEO of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, shares more insights from their new report on Candid insights.
