Exploring the Unseen: Subsurface Cavities on Earth and Beyond Cave systems remain one of the last frontiers of exploration on Earth and other planetary bodies. Lava tubes, natural underground tunnels formed by volcanic activity, lie hidden beneath the surface and offer unique scientific insights and potential habitats for future space missions. Leveraging Capella Space very high-resolution X-band SAR open datasets, Leonardo Carrer led the development of a novel methodology to understand the structure of lava tubes on Earth using Capella’s unique multi-pointing capabilities. Building on this work, a global research team including Leonardo Carrer, Riccardo Pozzobon, Francesco Sauro, Davide Castelletti, Gerald Wesley Patterson, and Lorenzo Bruzzone conducted an innovative analysis of cave conduits on the Moon. The results of their research, published in Nature Astronomy under the title " Radar Evidence of an Accessible Cave Conduit below the Mare Tranquillitatis Pit", highlight the exceptional value of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology. We are continually excited to see how experts in the field leverage our open datasets to create novel use cases for SAR and push the boundaries of what’s possible. This stunning image of Mt. Etna (Sicily, Italy), collected on July 9, 2024, was captured during its current eruptive episode, widely documented by international media. The eruption has led to significant changes to the summit crater, with reports suggesting that the volcano may have exceeded its previous height by several tens of meters. 🌋 Mt. Etna, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, often presents observation challenges for optical satellite imagery—this is where SAR imagery truly excels. Through Capella's leading constellation of high-resolution SAR satellites, we can reliably capture volcanic activity around the clock, in any weather or atmospheric conditions, revealing changes with unprecedented detail. In advance of our “A Sky Full of SARs” launch with Rocket Lab on July 20 UTC, we’re thrilled to introduce our Capella 13 mission patch. For this mission we have opted for a European twist, with a phoenix from Greek mythology symbolizing the resolve and resilience that we incorporate into our operations, ensuring that our clients always have access to timely, high-resolution SAR data from our ever-expanding constellation of satellites. Inspired by the popular British song, "A Sky Full of Stars," Capella 13 represents our leading position in space, our mission heritage with SAR technology, and our important business activities in the European region.
