This Grammy-nominated Afro-Cuban rockstar made his name a celebration of the legacy of the “cimarrón” - Cuban slaves of African descent who escaped slavery. Cimafunk’s music blends classic Cuban rhythms with innovative blends of funk, afrobeats, and hip hop. Throughout the United States and Europe, he has gained fame as a dynamic showman, delivering electrifying live performances in the company of La Tribu, his nine-piece band from Havana. His stage presence is of amazing strength from funk. Their live performance is an act of liberation. Six months ago, CARTEL arrived to The Post Building with a bag of mixed feelings about moving to Downtown St. Louis. Excitement, self doubt, courage, apprehension… but above of all: fear. What we found was a business community of entrepreneurs and dreamers, startups and grownups, big and small. We found generosity. We found opportunity. We found our place. A downtown full of fighters, working relentlessly to make a better city for all to thrive. Fear quickly turned into courage and from there work followed. Our team branded Downtown North STL, The Post Building, created brand new website for The Globe Building STL, and a whole podcast series going into its second season (Insight City Podcast). This week CARTEL expanded its footprint to the mezzanine that once housed the editor’s room for The St. Louis Post Dispatch newspaper. Personally, it feels full circle, going back to my editorial roots in Havana at the beginning of my career at Opus Habana Magazine, La Gaceta de Cuba, Conjunto, Anales del Caribe, and Cuba en el Ballet. All editorial platforms that informed my first steps in Design. We’d like to welcome the creative and entrepreneurial community of St. Louis to our home at The Post Building. June 19 we pay tribute to the day in 1863 when enslaved Black people in Texas learned they had been freed from bondage. The date commemorates the fall of slavery in Galveston, Texas, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863 to free enslaved Black people held in the Confederacy.
