This morning, Mental Health America released its annual State of Mental Health in America report. Each year, we use federal data to evaluate the mental health of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Our findings in this year’s report are clear: the U.S. is in a mental health crisis. Here’s a snapshot of what we learned: 🔹 23% of adults - nearly 60 million Americans - experienced a mental illness in the past year. 🔹 2022 had the highest number of deaths by suicides ever recorded in the U.S.; 5% of adults and 13% of youth reported having serious thoughts of suicide. 🔹 1 in 4 adults with frequent mental distress could not see a doctor due to cost. 🔹 1 in 5 youth had at least one major depressive episode in the past year; over half (nearly 3 million youth) did not receive treatment.
