Our leadership team bid farewell today to Sister Sharlet Wagner, as she becomes president of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in Indiana. She and her work as executive director of Catholic Charities' Newcomer Network were praised by Rev. Msgr. John Enzler as an extraordinary gift. President and CEO Jim Malloy read excerpts from letters and proclamations from government officials, the Catholic Charities Board of Directors and others about her work. Cardinal Wilton D. Gregory described her as "the face of the Church to immigrants." In saying goodbye, Sister praised the "amazing people I've worked with throughout the organization. I'll leave a big part of my heart here." #leadership #service

The Meals & Hope food truck from our Southern Maryland Food Bank this week greeted a long line of vehicles for a special drive-through lunchtime distribution at LIFESTREAM CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE. Our SHARE Food Network brings lower-cost groceries to many people across #DC and #Maryland and provides food packages for our free distributions. The employees and residents of Mulumba House welcomed Catholic Charities USA and staff members from individual Catholic Charities agencies across the country this week for a tour and information session about the transitional housing location and its Welcome Home Reentry Program. Attendees from Catholic Charities USA’s Prison Ministry Reentry Workgroup Conference were given a red-carpet welcome and met some of the 29 men who live at Mulumba House. Welcome Home provides mentoring, case-management services and housing to individuals returning to their communities from incarceration. “This place saves lives,” one said. “Now I have a support system that isn't just on the phone. I can sit and talk to staff here,” said another. “The help I get from the people here, I get from family. This summer, Mondays mean game night at New York Avenue Men’s Shelter. Seven members of the St. John's College High School baseball team and their dads set out games on tables in the shelter cafeteria. Chess, Jenga, Connect Four, Backgammon and other games and activities are available as the high school students welcome some friendly competition. The #volunteers also set up and serve dinner to residents. It’s a home run for all, as these volunteers bring a sense of community and caring to residents of the D.C. shelter. #CCADW #communityservice #volunteerism #volunteering #washingtondc
