The Barbarism and Filth of New York’s Live Markets - A Warning from Founder and Executive Director Kathy Stevens Yesterday, The New York Times published an article titled “Bird Flu Has Already Appeared in New York’s Animal Markets. What’s Next?” In it, writer Apoorva Mandavilli vividly portrayed conditions at over 70 live animal markets dotted throughout the city–conditions that are barbarously cruel to the chickens, ducks, geese, sheep, goats, pigs, and cows and more purchased and killed at these markets. But these live markets also pose such grave risks to human health that their continued existence calls human sanity into question. Chickens, geese, ducks, and turkeys are among the 11 species of rescued animals who reside at Catskill Animal Sanctuary in New York’s Hudson Valley.  In response to threats posed by Avian flu, we've instituted numerous protocols to ensure the health of our birds, our staff, and our weekend visitors. We monitor outbreaks on the USDA website, and when necessary, suit up in full quarantine gear (suits, booties, gloves, and masks) to handle birds. We limit human foot traffic in bird enclosures, and have spent thousands of dollars to put roofs over enclosures in areas within the flight paths of migrating birds to ensure that our birds can enjoy the outdoors without being exposed to the feces of birds flying overhead. Sadly, we've even removed our ducks from the pond where they should be spending many happy hours a day just being ducks. Other sanctuaries have implemented similar practices. The contrast between the care required to minimize the risk of future outbreaks--as exemplified by sanctuary practices--and the utterly filthy conditions at live markets dotted throughout the city--couldn't be starker. Across “food animal” industries, policymakers are unwilling to make decisions in the interest of mercy, compassion, human and environmental health. Please join us in expressing gratitude to The New York Times for exposing these disturbing markets for what they are: petri dishes. And please, for your own safety, for that of your family and community, and for future animals who might be spared the misery of life and death in these places, boycott live markets. As one of the pioneering #teaching sanctuaries in the nation, CAS is honored to continue tradition by hosting this fundraising event. When we decide who will live with who at the sanctuary, it is usually based on friendships and lifestyles to make sure the animals are happy and comfortable. A few months ago we made the decision to have our two youngest cows, Milton (left) and Anya (right) join our most senior group of cows based on diet. Milton and Anya are only two years old and growing quickly so they need more calories to sustain their growth. Our senior group of boys have a harder time maintaining weight and need more calories as well. We worried if they could find common ground with their large age gap, but the most beautiful thing happened. 💕 Calvin (center), a 12 year old steer who used to watch Milton and Anya through a fence line when they were too young to join a herd, immediately recognized them and took them in as his own. Calvin now spends his days carefully watching over them, gently reminding them about manners, and has shown them so much love. Cows are deeply emotional animals who form strong bonds and look at their herd as family. Watching Calvin step in to take care of Milton and Anya has been extremely special to watch.
