Socio-genomics is an emerging field in genomics that explores how one person's genotype can influence the observable traits of another. A study by Rutgers University published in the American Journal of Psychiatry found individuals carry genes that may predispose them to mental health issues such as addiction, anxiety, or depression. On vacation in Greece, Dr. István Szabó’s daughter picked up littered plastic straws on the beach and curiously asked her father about the germs that lived on them. Sparking his own curiosity, Dr. Szabó returned to the lab after vacation with more straws from the shoreline and discovered a new strand of microbe living on the discarded plastic, which was later named Parvularula mediterranea. According to the National Science Foundation (NSF), around 99% of the Earth’s microbes remain undiscovered. While driving from the Bay Area to his country home in Mendocino, the ocean air carried a question to biochemist Kary Mullis: “What if a scientist were able to isolate a particular segment of DNA and copy it?” Thus, the idea for the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was born. This 1983 vacation drive resulted in a Nobel Prize-winning idea, posing as a little reminder that taking time to recharge can lead to big ideas!
