Lana and Julie Moore, CLA’s Board Chair, had the privilege of attending the American Bar Endowment’s Annual Board meeting in Charleston. As a previous grantee of the ABE, CLA was invited to speak about our work and impact in the Lowcountry!

Today marks the 5th anniversary of CLA's founder, Sally Newman's, untimely passing. Sally was a dedicated public interest attorney with experience in criminal, community development, civil rights, refugee resettlement, employment, and environmental law. She was passionate about serving those who lack clear access to legal representation: the hardworking individuals who can be easily crippled by a legal setback. In 2016, she founded CLA, South Carolina's first and only sliding-scale nonprofit law firm. Today, Sally’s legacy lives on through Charleston Legal Access and our mission. We, along with your support, continue to keep her memory alive.

There has been increased press coverage recently about the need to support middle-class Americans—hard-working, everyday people who have jobs but still struggle to make ends meet, especially during emergencies like legal problems. Earlier this summer, Lana presented at the 2024 Equal Justice Conference in Detroit on the "Nuts and Bolts of Starting a Nonprofit Sliding Scale Law Firm." This conference allowed Lana to connect with legal service providers nationwide, learn about innovative programs aimed at bridging the justice gap, and bring those ideas to South Carolina.
