More than 100 visitors explored rain gardens, living shorelines, bioswales, tree plantings, and other projects throughout Norfolk last Saturday during CBF's Green Infrastructure Tour. “Each of these projects builds up our community’s protection against flooding in our vulnerable region. In the fight for a healthier community and Chesapeake Bay, advocates have taken legal action against Kent Island’s Chesterhaven Beach residential development project. “We can’t just ignore environmental law in the name of ‘growth,'" said CBF Maryland Advocacy Director Alan Girard. “The Queen Anne’s County Board of Commissioners is trying to go around Maryland’s Critical Area law by changing their Comprehensive Plan and allowing a 90-unit residential subdivision on extremely environmentally sensitive land. It would be devasting to the Chesapeake Bay ecosystem if this decision is upheld." Read more: https://lnkd.in/ept33xva

Rising water temperatures and low-oxygen areas are yet another stressor for striped bass in the Chesapeake Bay during summer. “We have to look at this holistically,” said CBF Maryland Executive Director Allison Colden. “Over the long term, reducing pollution, improving habitat, and addressing climate change are all going to be an important part of ensuring striped bass have a future in the Chesapeake Bay.” But for now, "giving striped bass a summer break is one way we can help ensure the future of these fish, and also of the fishery.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gdXHyqmG

Key states in the Chesapeake Bay watershed are not fully on track to meet commitments to reduce pollution to the Bay by 2025, according to evaluations released today by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. “While tremendous progress has been made, these evaluation reports demonstrate we still have a long way to go. This December, the Chesapeake Bay’s six governors and federal leaders must recommit to working together and pledge to update the Chesapeake Bay Agreement by the end of 2025, including a new timeline for water quality goals that should be measured in years, not decades," said CBF President and CEO Hilary Harp Falk.
