Children's Hospital of Orange County is honored to be the only Batten Disease Centers of Excellence on the West Coast and one of five in the country. This designation will help accelerate research to meet the needs of patients affected by this challenging neurometabolic disorder.

Thanks to the generosity of Sherry and John Phelan, CHOC will be establishing an innovative integrative gastroenterology clinic and culinary medicine program. Dr. Ashish Chogle, medical director of gastroenterology at CHOC, will lead the programs and explains, "Our care model will deliver better outcomes and an elevated family experience. Ultimately, we hope to influence public health strategies and foster widespread acceptance of holistic health practices, including using food as medicine in pediatric care." Clinical research coordinators (CRCs) play a critical role in #research. Direct extensions of principal investigators on studies, CRCs thoughtfully manage research projects from beginning to end. CHOC recently earned national recognition for our approach to treating jaundice in newborns. The honor comes after CHOC's participation in an 18-month effort by the American Academy of Pediatrics (#AAP) to improve quality of care for babies born with elevated levels of bilirubin. CHOC is proud of Clinical Research Supervisor Angelyque Lorenzana for the impact she is making on epilepsy research. Most recently, she was elected to the board of directors of the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Consortium, a collaborative of more than 75 U.S. epilepsy centers and over 350 pediatric epileptologists, neuropsychologists, and pediatric epilepsy researchers.
