The City of Shelby's Fire and Rescue Department conducted a badge pinning ceremony, on Tuesday, August 13, at fire station one on Grover Street. New employees were sworn in as firefighters, and one employee who received a promotion was also sworn in during the ceremony. Employees sworn in as firefighters included Casey Alder, Jared Beal, Jordan Mayes, and Conner Price. The City of Shelby has announced that Dusty Hill has been selected as the Employee of the 2nd Quarter, 2024.   Dusty began his career as a firefighter with the Shelby Fire and Rescue Department in October 2015 and was promoted to Engineer in November of 2022. Dusty has been an exemplary leader and assists in the department’s public education programs in our community. He has taken all available classes required for his job position and the next position up of Captain as well. He recently recertified his state EMT-Basic certification and has done a great job helping train new employees at the department. The City of Shelby’s Fire and Rescue Department has earned the distinction of an ISO Class 1 rating. This is the highest rating a fire and rescue department can achieve and represents years of continuous improvement in fire and rescue services as well as the City’s water system. An ISO (Insurance Services Office) rating is given to cities and towns across the country indicating how prepared they are for fires, and is graded on a scale of 1-10, with 1 representing communities with the most effective fire service capabilities, and 10 representing communities with the least effective fire service capabilities. Of the 1,217 fire departments across North Carolina, only 30 have achieved the designation of an ISO 1 rating, and there are only 373 departments in the country that have obtained an ISO 1 class rating. The City of Shelby has announced that Landon Hall has been selected as the Employee of the 1st Quarter, 2024. Landon began his career with the City of Shelby’s Public Works Department in 2019 and is currently assigned to street maintenance as an Equipment Operator. He is an exemplary worker and is always willing to take after-hours calls for the department and has assisted the tree crew on numerous emergency calls for downed trees.
