The city of Las Vegas was founded on May 15, 1905 and is home to more than 594,000 residents. The largest city in Nevada, Las Vegas is governed by Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman and six city council members. City Manager Mike Janssen, who was appointed by the city council, oversees administrative duties and the city’s more than 3,000 employees. Covering 133 square miles, the city of Las Vegas is building a world-class destination to showcase the best in arts, culture, entertainment and medicine by expanding the revitalization of downtown Las Vegas with projects like the World Market Center and Symphony Park. To create and encourage new development and redevelopment throughout the city, work is being done to increase and diversify the city’s economy and create jobs through business attraction, retention and expansion programs. Beyond the glitz and glamour, there is another Las Vegas for residents that is vibrant, affordable, economically and ethnically diverse and progressive where citizens feel safe, enjoy their neighborhoods and can access their city government. The city offers more than 85 beautiful parks, in addition to 10 public golf courses and 12 swimming pools for residents and visitors alike. The city also continues to make strides towards becoming one of the most sustainable cities in the world, focusing efforts on conserving water and energy, recycling and building city facilities to standards that have the least impact on the environment.

Congratulations to our Employee of the Month Zach Bucher! Zach began working as a liaison in the Mayor's Office, but has since moved on to Government and Community Affairs. Always affable and willing to help, Zach is known throughout the city as someone who can problem solve and work collaboratively. Recently Zach went above and beyond in his job to assist a Las Vegas citizen. In the course of his job, several years ago, Zach met Onofrio "No-No" Zicari. No-No is a World War II veteran who stormed Omaha Beach at Normandy on D-Day 80 years ago on June 6, 1944. Zach was a key component in No-No receiving a long overdue Purple Heart, being recognized by the City Council and ensuring that he rode with me and my husband Oscar during the Veterans Day Parade. No-No is now 101 years old and this year received an invitation to return to Omaha Beach with other survivors for the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day invasion. No-No wanted to go, but at his advanced age, he would need a caretaker to go with him to help with travel, transportation, meals, and taking care of him. Sadly, there was no one to support him making this pilgrimage back to Omaha Beach. Showing incredible kindness and commitment to our community, Zach agreed to go on the trip to be a chaperone for No-No to ensure that this veteran would return to Omaha Beach. No-No is still very sharp and has great recall of World War II and the part he played, so naturally the media that gathered in Normandy for the 80th anniversary flocked to interview him. Zach became No-No's “public information officer,” scheduling interviews and helping to make sure No-No's incredible story was told. What a great example to other employees showing that each of our citizens is special and that we should strive to help them any way we can.
