Back in 2018, I saw how AI could help solve some of the problems facing the child welfare system, but my ideas weren't well received. I was in-house counsel at a national nonprofit, Casey Family Programs, which sought to bring data and innovation to the child welfare agencies and courts across the country. Before that, I spent several years as an Assistant Attorney General working on complex child welfare appeals and advising the HQ of a state child welfare agency. When I told leadership my ideas for how AI could change the game for agency attorneys with massive backlogs, and for social workers who couldn't search the record easily to find info about a child's birth relatives or Native American history, the response was..... skepticism. Silence. In 2019 decided to write a law review article about my ideas which was published in 2020 (after getting rejected by one academic review cycle). Many of the ideas I explored in that article made their way into my vision for Clearbrief, which I founded in 2020. I'm having a full circle moment as I take the stage today as a speaker at the National Association of Counsel for Children conference. I'm sharing how gov agencies (both prosecution, defense), courts, and nonprofits are using Clearbrief.ai in Word to keep the stories of children and families more visible during the writing process, and to reduce the admin burden they face in an age of decreasing budgets and increasing caseloads. If you're in a similar situation of trying to innovate from inside a large, matrixed org, just know that the path is not easy or linear, and true systems change takes time.
