It was an honor to join our friends, The Japan-America Society of Georgia (JASG), to celebrate its 44th Anniversary at the 2024 Annual Dinner Gala! This year, we are also commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta, which opened in 1974. Since then, the Japanese Consulate in Atlanta has worked to deepen relations and understanding between Japan and the southeastern United States. MOIIA continues to support the Japanese community and values our partnership with JASG, the Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta and Consul General Mio Maeda, as well as the many Atlanta-based Japanese organizations and businesses that collaborate with our office.

The Atlanta City Studio Book Club will meet today, Tuesday, August 27, to discuss "Just Action: How to Challenge Segregation Enacted Under The Color of Law," by Richard Rothstein. The book is a blueprint for community leaders and concerned citizens looking to undo imposed residential segregation that was described in "The Color of Law." The Department of City Planning is currently in search of a Deputy Commissioner - Strategy. This individual will be responsible for leading departmental directors and supporting the City Planning Commissioner in the implementation of the Atlanta City Design. National, local, and community leaders and scholars met this week to hear how federal dollars will be used to remediate the former Chattahoochee Brick Company site. Since buying the land in 2022, the city received an EPA Brownfield Cleanup Grant under the Biden-Harris Investing in America initiative to clean up the site prior to its development as a park, memorial, and green space offering improved access to the Chattahoochee River and Proctor Creek. The Chattahoochee Brick property is historically, culturally, and ecologically important because of its location on Native American land along the Chattahoochee River and the atrocities there during forced labor through convict leasing. Its reimagining will bring environmental justice and restoration to the area.
