As August unfolds, it marks the peak of summer, bringing longer days and plenty of sunshine. It’s the perfect time to remind ourselves and others about the importance of sun safety. Here’s why staying sun-safe is crucial and some tips to help you enjoy the sun responsibly: Why Sun Safety Matters: 1. Prevent Skin Cancer: Prolonged exposure to UV rays can increase the risk of skin cancer, including melanoma, the deadliest form. Protecting your skin is essential to reduce this risk. 2. Avoid Sunburn: Sunburns are not only painful but can also lead to long-term skin damage. Repeated burns can accelerate skin aging and increase cancer risk. 3. Eye Protection: UV rays can also harm your eyes, leading to conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration. Sunglasses with UV protection are a must. Tips for Staying Safe: 1. Seek Shade: Especially during peak hours, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest. 2. Wear Protective Clothing: Long-sleeved shirts, hats with brims, and sunglasses with UV protection can shield your skin and eyes from harmful rays. 3. Use Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating. 4. Stay Hydrated: The heat can lead to dehydration, so drink plenty of water throughout the day. 5. Check the UV Index: Stay informed about the daily UV index in your area to adjust your outdoor activities accordingly. Enjoy the sunshine, but remember to take these precautions to protect your skin and health. Stay safe and make the most of the summer season!

MELANOMA & SKIN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH May is Melanoma Awareness Month — an excellent reminder as you head outdoors to #practicesafesun. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S., and unprotected UV exposure is the most preventable risk factor for skin cancer. So throw on that sunscreen! And remember, with moles or spots to follow your ABCs: A – Asymetry: One half unlike the other half B – Borders irregular: Scalloped or poorly defined borders C – Color Varied: Shades of tan, brown, black, white, red or blue D – Diameter is larger than a pencil eraser E – Evolving: Changing in any way, including itching, burning, stinging, bleeding If you have any changing or concerning moles or spots, make an appointment to get your skin checked by a board-certified dermatologist. #melanomaawareness #skincancerawareness Source: American Academy of Dermatology

Maggie received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Illinois State University in Bloomington, Illinois, where she continued her post-graduate work, receiving her master’s degree in nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner certification in 2022. Maggie has worked as a medical supervisor at a Normal, Illinois medspa, immersing herself in the injectable industry and overseeing a team of specialists to elevate patient satisfaction and outcomes.
