Exciting updates on the North East Link project! North East Link is Victoria’s largest road project. It will fix the missing link in Melbourne’s freeway network, take 15,000 trucks off local roads a day, and slash travel times by up to 35 minutes. Delve Underground provided the Spark Consortium with specialist underground structures design services for the TBM and SEM tunnels, and selected cut-and-cover and open-cut works. #delveunderground

NORTH EAST LINK TBM ASSEMBLY NEARING COMPLETION The two Herrenknecht AG tunnel boring machines (TBMs) that will dig the North East Link road tunnels are a step closer to starting digging. The TBM cutterheads have been lowered into place in Watsonia - one of the last major pieces to be assembled for the TBMs before they can be launched. The huge purple cutterhead will be front-and-centre when tunnelling starts - the first part that cuts into the rock. Next, the TBMs will be tested and commissioned before they start digging south towards Bulleen. When fully assembled, the massive TBMs will be 90m long, 15.6m wide and more than 4000 tonnes – among the biggest in the southern hemisphere. The TBMs will move at approximately 10m per day and up to 45m below ground. Tunnelling will go well into 2026, ahead of the tunnels opening to traffic in 2028. North East Link’s twin 3-lane road tunnels will connect the M80 Ring Road to the Eastern Freeway. At 6.5km long – twice the length of the Burnley tunnel – they’re set to be the longest road tunnels in Victoria. We had an amazing time in Nashville last week at the 2024 North American Tunneling Conference. It was fantastic to reconnect with so many clients, colleagues, and friends in the industry, sharing insights and building stronger relationships. The event was filled with engaging presentations, informative sessions, and valuable networking opportunities. Kudos to the organizing committee (which includes Amanda Morgan, P.E.) for a job well done! In addition, special thanks to our exceptional presenters: Mark Trim, Sarah Wilson, Ritika S. Kundu, Ph.D., P.E., Joseph Rigney, MSCE, P.E., David Nowak, PE, and Elnaz Saminfar. Their presentations were insightful and we’re proud of their efforts and the recognition they brought to our team. We look forward to seeing everyone in Dallas for RETC 2025! #delveunderground #NAT2024 #NATunneling2024

Kush Chohan, PE, GE, PMP will present on the BNSF Gateway Sub Tunnel #4 Emergency Repair on Thursday, June 27 at the ASCE Golden Gate Branch meeting. The meeting is open to ASCE members and non-members in the Bay Area and will take place at the EBMUD Training Room in Oakland, CA. Networking begins at 5:30 PM, followed by dinner and presentation from 6:30 PM- 8:00 PM. BNSF Gateway Sub Tunnel #4 is a 480-foot-long (146 m) tunnel on an active BNSF rail line near Quincy, California. The tunnel liner consisted of timber sets and lagging, concrete panels, and steel sets with steel lagging. As a result of the Dixie Fire that ravaged this area in July 2021, the tunnel collapsed and blocked the rail line after the 188 feet (57 m) of timber liner at the tunnel center burned. Delve Underground provided a conceptual repair design and bid documents within five days of the collapse. BNSF set up a command center to oversee this project, as well as other fire-related projects in the area. The contractor and Delve Underground inspectors worked around the clock, 7 days a week until the tunnel was reopened. Join Eric Westergren for his presentation on Revolutionizing Australia’s Large Underground Infrastructure Projects with Digital Engineering on Wednesday, June 26 at 9:15 a.m. at NAT2024. This presentation presents a case study of two major Australian infrastructure projects that used digital engineering to facilitate design delivery: WestConnex Project (Rozelle Interchange) and Sydney Metro West (Eastern Tunneling Package). The presentation will cover project overviews and building information modeling (BIM) execution and focuses on modeling techniques, software utilization, data management strategies, and how the digital models helped the design-build team mitigate impacts to schedule by identifying clashes between disciplines before the execution of work. Finally, it demonstrates the positive and transformative impact of digital engineering on the design and construction of large underground infrastructure projects and highlights its role in asset management throughout the project lifecycle. https://lnkd.in/gcuXxqEP   #delveunderground #NAT2024 #NATunneling2024

On Monday, June 24, 3:20 p.m. Joseph Rigney, MSCE, P.E. and David Nowak, PE will be presenting on the Sumner Tunnel Rehabilitation at next week’s North American Tunneling Conference. Originally constructed in the 1930s, the 1-mile-long Sumner Tunnel is 31 feet in diameter and carries traffic deep below Boston Harbor, connecting Boston and East Boston. This project includes both design and construction for the rehabilitation of the nearly 100-year-old #tunnel. The primary work includes repairing advanced deterioration at the tunnel crown with new precast arches that will add protection and strengthening. The restoration also consists of upgrading the tunnel systems, including permanently removing 75% of the existing exhaust duct suspended over the roadway to improve the overall ventilation system capacity and performance. https://lnkd.in/gcuXxqEP   #delveunderground #NAT2024 #NATunneling2024
