The U.S., Colorado and Denver are currently experiencing the worst overdose crisis ever. In Colorado, 1,865 lives were lost from a drug overdose in 2023. A day in advance of International Overdose Awareness Day, Denver Health is hosting a program featuring speakers from our Center for Addiction Medicine (CAM) and people with lived experience to bring awareness to preventable overdoses and honor the lives lost. CAM Director Brooke Bender spoke with Great Day Colorado about the importance of raising awareness around drug overdose and how Denver Health’s Substance Treatment Line is a free and safe way for those facing substance use disorder to talk to a trained specialist. 📢 Attention Health and Human Services Region VII disaster preparedness professionals: Through funding from the HHS Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response, Denver Health hosts the Mountain Plains Regional Disaster Health Response System, which provides health care leadership, knowledge, expertise and support in disaster response for our communities in Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming and Utah. There is an ongoing blood culture bottle shortage resulting from supply chain issues in the manufacturing of the Becton Dickinson Bactec blood culture bottles specific to Becton Dickinson analyzers. Our Medical Advisory Panel (MAP) has developed a summary of interim guidance in response to a request for expertise regarding this ongoing shortage. Members of the MAP are hosting a review and live Q&A session of available guidance for Region VIII in a webinar this Thursday, August 29, 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. MST. Denver Health is thrilled to share a recent significant achievement and its community involvement from this past weekend. Our dedicated volunteers were out in full force helping communities celebrate and have access to resources. Federico F. Peña Southwest and Montbello Family Health Center volunteers helped their neighbors prepare for school with backpack giveaways, while Park Hill Family Health Center volunteers participated in the annual Day of Legends summer send-off event. Check out our perfectly placed tent under the double rainbow! 🌈💙 Shout out to the Peña team and their families who volunteered for our back-to-school backpack and supply giveaway. Combined efforts from the community and hospital resulted in almost $3,000 being raised for supplies, including jump ropes for the kids! Our Reach Out and Read Colorado team donated books, Excalibur Outreach sponsored backpacks, Re:Vision (Denver, CO) provided refreshing agua fresca and shared information about our community garden, and the Denver Office of Human Resources team connected families with vital resources. We’re also honored to have received the Social Responsibility Community Service Award for 2024 from Montbello 2020, a community-driven organization dedicated to education, safety, diversity and inclusiveness. This recognition is a testament to our five-year partnership with the organization, particularly our joint efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. A former clinician and now research associate at Denver Health, Ileana Barron knows how research can change lives. She is a bilingual mother of a child with a complex medical condition and says her roles have led her to encourage participation in clinical research studies. “These things in my life story have made me passionate about working in research to improve care delivery, especially in underrepresented communities,” Barron said. Participants in our studies reflect our diversity: 66% of all patients currently enrolled in trials identify as either Hispanic or an underserved/minority demographic. Of that number, 43% identify as Hispanic. Denver Health’s Chris Thurstone, MD, Director of Behavioral Health Services, recently sat down with FOX31 KDVR / Channel 2 KWGN to discuss his upcoming deployment in August with the Army Reserve to help treat the behavioral health of fellow soldiers in the Middle East. Serving for 12 years in the military, Dr. Thurstone has seen a lot, including one of the most common casualties of military service: mental health. Last weekend, the Denver Health Mobile Center team partnered with the Evergreen Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, BOYZ Brotherhood Inc., Mount Evans Lodge #7 and other local organizations to put on the inaugural Breast Cancer Education, Awareness and Walk event in Park Hill. Denver Health provided educational materials and swag for attendees and signed up those interested in mobile mammograms and cervical cancer screening appointments onsite at our mobile health center! Speakers included Denver Health Director of Radiology and Chief of Breast Imaging Randy C. Miles, MD, MPH, who spoke about the risks of breast cancer and the importance of testing and preventive measures.
