"Senior Lubrication Subject Matter Expert | Enhancing Equipment Reliability, Developing Tailored Lubrication Programs & Training Teams for Optimal Performance | Passionate About Precision & Longevity in Asset Management"

Keeping lubricants clean is crucial not only for machinery efficiency but also for reducing the carbon footprint. Here are five important reasons: 1. **Enhanced Equipment Efficiency**: Clean lubricants reduce friction and wear in machinery, ensuring that equipment operates at peak efficiency. When machinery runs efficiently, it consumes less energy, directly lowering greenhouse gas emissions and the overall carbon footprint. 2. **Extended Lubricant Life**: Regularly maintaining clean lubricants extends their lifespan, reducing the need for frequent oil changes and minimizing the production and disposal of used oil. This decrease in oil consumption contributes to lower carbon emissions associated with lubricant production and disposal processes. 3. **Reduced Equipment Downtime and Longevity**: Clean lubricants prevent contamination and wear, reducing the frequency of equipment failures and extending the lifespan of machinery. Less frequent replacements and repairs translate to reduced manufacturing demand, lower resource consumption, and a smaller carbon footprint. 4. **Lower Emissions from Combustion Engines**: In engines, clean lubricants help maintain optimal combustion conditions, reducing the formation of carbon deposits and improving fuel efficiency. Better fuel efficiency means less fuel consumption and fewer emissions, contributing to a reduced carbon footprint. 5. **Decreased Environmental Impact from Contaminants**: Contaminated lubricants can leak and cause environmental damage, including soil and water pollution. Properly maintained lubricants minimize the risk of leaks and spills, reducing the environmental impact and the carbon footprint associated with remediation efforts and environmental degradation. By keeping lubricants clean, industries can significantly contribute to sustainability goals and reduce their overall carbon footprint.

𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗧 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗕𝗘𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗦 𝗧𝗢𝗗𝗔𝗬! Etching of bearings is most commonly caused by the presence of free and emulsified water in the lubricant and is particularly common in equipment that runs intermittently. During normal operation, the lubricant will adsorb moisture from exposure to water or airborne humidity.  At very low levels, water will dissolve in the oil at operating temperatures and will not have a significant impact on bearing life. However, as soon as the machine shuts down and the lubricant temperature drops, water will come out of solution and collect between the raceways and rolling elements. The result is a characteristic dark etching pattern evenly spaced where the stationary rolling elements contact the raceway. Corrosive etching can be prevented by ensuring that the moisture content in the oil is as low as possible. This can easily be achieved by equipping bearing housings and reservoirs with Des-Case desiccant breathers that keep the headspace above the oil below 20% relative humidity. By controlling headspace humidity, the moisture content in the oil can also be controlled, helping to ensure that etching no longer occurs. Call us today to keep your bearings and equipment 𝗗𝗥𝗬, 𝗖𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗡 and 𝗥𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘. #BearingFailure #DryCleanReliable #descase #contaminationcontrol #equipmentreliabilitysolutions

It is often stated that viscosity is the most important property of a lubricant, and with good reason. Film thickness—the separation between moving machine surfaces—is primarily dictated by the lubricant’s viscosity under operating loads, speeds, and temperatures. For this reason, viscosity is one of the first properties we measure when evaluating in-service oil samples. Unfortunately, labs may also be measuring the wrong type of viscosity! In Precision Lubrication Magazine's recent addition, Des-Case's Mark Barnes outlines the difference between dynamic and kinematic viscosity and which is more appropriate for in-service oil analysis. Hydraulic systems are often some of the most critical applications across many different industries. What’s unique to hydraulic systems is the fluid not only lubricates moving components such as hydraulic pumps and drives, but it also allows the system to do useful “work”. Factor into that, the sensitivity that hydraulic pumps and valves have for contamination, it’s no wonder that the health and cleanliness of the fluid is the primary driver of hydraulic system reliability. In our latest Application Insight, we focus on hydraulic systems and best practices to keep your equipment DRY. CLEAN. RELIABLE.
