#GIDS "Where Are They Now Wednesdays" posts will feature our amazing #datascience alumni, highlighting their career journeys and what they learned from their time at University of Rochester. 👏 We're kicking off the series with alumnus Zhiyu Lei '22, who graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2022 with a BS in Data Science and a BS in Applied Mathematics. Zhiyu went on to earn his MSE in Computer and Information Science from University of Pennsylvania. He currently works as a software engineer with DraftKings Inc. in Boston, MA, developing endpoint request handlers and database procedures using .NET and MySQL, conducting code reviews and functional tests, and deploying solutions to cloud environments. Zhiyu says, "Though my current work is more software engineering than data science, I still value my data science experience at UR a lot. I chose data science mainly because of my sense of numbers and figures, my interest in machine learning and AI, and also the flexible curriculum structure at UR GIDS. I would always encourage current students to explore more and get their hands dirty beyond the classes, including but not limited to doing research, contributing to open source communities, working further from course or hackathon projects, and even trying to deploy them to the cloud for the public if possible. It is also a good practice opportunity to stand on the stage and share with others during various club meetings or GIDS events. I always wish I could have done even better when I was in college." As I reflect on my recent internship at DraftKings Inc., which wrapped up a few weeks ago, I want to share my experience and express my gratitude. Over the past 10 weeks, I had the chance to work as a Software Engineering Intern on the PAAS InfraDev GG (web architecture) team. This role allowed me to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic environment, and I’m grateful for the opportunity. A sincere thank you to Geoffrey Featherstone for his exceptional support and guidance throughout the internship. Your leadership has been instrumental in my growth. I also want to acknowledge Connor Stevens, my mentor, for offering invaluable insights and patiently answering my many questions, which have greatly shaped my professional development. My appreciation extends to Alison Joyce, my recruiter, for her role in facilitating this opportunity. Lastly, I want to recognize my fellow interns. It was a pleasure to collaborate with such a dedicated and talented group of individuals. This summer, I had the opportunity to join DraftKings Inc. as an Analytics Intern on the Digital Marketing Analytics team. Over the course of ten weeks, I developed complex models to enhance the KPI reporting process for both Sports and iGaming verticals and better inform the decisions of Digital Marketing stakeholders. Not only did I learn new software tools and programming languages, but I was lucky enough to be on a team whose work played a role in many pillars of the company, allowing me to hone my critical thinking skills in a dynamic, ever-evolving environment. A special thank you to my manager, Melanie Whisler, as well as Connor McMurtry, the DraftKings Campus team, and many more who contributed to making my summer internship an exceptional one—your mentorship has helped me grow as a leader and a thinker. I am so thankful for this experience!
