Duolingo is the world's most popular way to learn a language.

Über uns

Our mission is to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available. Duolingo is the most downloaded education app in the history of the App Store and in 2019 became the top-grossing education app worldwide. We set out to do something altogether different in the learning space. Learning a new language is hard; we believe it should be fun. We use bite-sized lessons that feel like playing a game to keep our learners motivated. Learning a new language can also be expensive, and because we believe it should be free, we made it so. Duolingo has been named to: BuiltIn's Best Places to Work (2023), Fast Company Best Workplaces for Innovators (2022), Fast Company 10 Most Innovative Education Company (2022), among others.

Our Chief Engineering Officer, Natalie Glance, shared some of her formative experiences growing up and how this impacted her professional path. We're so glad she proved them wrong. 💚 #duolingo #womenintech #engineering

I often get asked about my experience working in tech as a woman. But really the formative moments happen much earlier than in the workplace; they happen growing up as a girl. They come from the media, they come from your parents, from teachers and from your friends. Some of these experiences are positive and life-changing and some are negative and influential in a way that gets buried deep, in the same way that other childhood experiences get buried. What was life-changing in a positive way was my parents’ influence: they instilled in me a love of learning from a very early age. My dad was the one who taught me math. When I was five, he taught me rudimentary algebra and soon had me solving (very easy) systems of linear equations. A few years later, I remember watching him sketch out a visual explanation to the concept of integration for my brother who was taking calculus and thinking “oh, that makes sense.” I loved math; I loved the “aha” moment of solving a hard problem or understanding a new concept. In fifth grade, my school had me take an IQ test and a math assessment. They told me that I was ready for algebra and I was thrilled. But it wasn’t until seventh grade that I actually got to take algebra; in the meantime, they had me self-study pre-algebra in the library during math period in sixth grade. Then in seventh grade I took the SATs as part of a Johns Hopkins study to identify students with “exceptional mathematical ability.” I did well enough to be invited to the annual recognition ceremony. At the ceremony, they shared statistics from the past several years: the only children to get perfect math scores were boys. They also shared study results purporting to explain why this was so: apparently, boys’ brains were better at visual reasoning than girls’ and this meant that girls could never be at the top of the distribution. This wasn’t just society telling me I’d never be as good at math as the boys – it was an apparently rigorous scientific result. I remember thinking: how am I supposed to disprove that? I’m only one person – it’s unlikely that I would be the girl to prove them wrong and be as good as the strongest boys. Even if I ended up being the best at math in my school (which I was) or win the math contest for my county (which I did), odds were good that I’d never be competitive at the national level (which I wasn’t). As adults, we rationally know that it's very hard to be the token person who has to prove the worth of their group. But it doesn’t start in the workplace. It starts much, much earlier than that, and that sense of being “less than” is buried deep. It’s only years and years later, now that I’m telling this story, that it occurs to me that those scientific results could be flawed. It’s not surprising I didn’t get a perfect score on the math SATs when I was 12. The test assumed knowledge of algebra and geometry, and I was only midway through learning algebra – nothing to do with my so-called girl brain.

Our Product Managers (PMs) are a little bit like mad scientists. 🧑🏽🔬 🧪 They are responsible for running their own experiments, analyzing the results, and working with the Engineers and Designers to implement the findings for new features. 📊 We currently have hundreds of experiments running at the company—some are small iterations and others are big bets. We have an internal experimentation tool that helps set up the tests properly to ensure statistical accuracy. ⏩ It only takes about two weeks to have learnings because of our large user base. This empowers our PMs to make quick decisions, leading to more impact faster. Here’s a recent experiment we did about reminders for our new feature, Friend Streak. Which one do you think performed the best? ➕ Follow us for more content like this! #duolingo #technology #productmanagement #onlyatduolingo

“A lot of people talk about education as something that brings equality to different social classes. But I always saw it as the opposite, as something that brings inequality.” Watch this video to hear why our CEO and co-founder, Luis von Ahn, started Duolingo with the mission of creating equal access to education for everyone. Our Product Managers (PMs) are curious at their core, and often take inspiration from daily life to test out on our products. Question for all of the PMs out there: Have you ever created an experiment or shipped a feature based on something that inspired you from daily life? 🤔 #duolingo #productmanagement

Head of Product at Duolingo • Hiring

Product managers know that inspiration can come from anywhere in your daily life. I can’t tell you how many tiny moments in my day have inspired something we test on Duolingo. Here’s an example… I have a trainer, and at the end of one of our sessions he asked: “Am I going to see you tomorrow?” That nudge really clicked with me. I sent the idea over to a few of our PMs to test that kind of message on our “streak nudge” screen (which happens after you do a lesson that extends your streak). The copy we tested encouraged users to “come back tomorrow” and keep their streak. The simple change was a success—with a 3% increase in day 14 retention for new users and a significant increase DAUs 🔥🔥🔥 This was such a fun win for us, and our PMs make these kinds of connections every day. Thank you, Pieter Cranenbroek, for the collection of posts about our growth. 🚀 There is no magic bullet to success, however, our culture of rigorous experimentation, cutting-edge AI, and powerful marketing has been a winning combination. 📈 It’s owl or nothing for us. 🦉 #duolingo #technology #artificialintelligence #experimentation #marketing https://lnkd.in/eys6g6J4
