Like 2024, with wars raging abroad and unrest growing at home, with shots fired at political figures, with an incumbent president withdrawing from the race, and with, as a young reporter (my father) put it in 1968, “a mounting sense of powerlessness in the face of events,” 1968 was a tumultuous year in American history." Happy Women’s Equality Day! While we celebrate the strides women have made, the numbers show we still have work to do. Women hold only 28% of 535 congressional seats, 31.9% of 310 statewide elective executive offices, 32.8% of 7,386 state legislative seats, and 26.8% of 1,616 mayoral seats (in cities over 30,000 people) nationwide. The Center for American Women and Politics' Women, Money, and Politics Watch 2024 was featured in Rutgers Today for their utilization of the Amarel Supercomputer. Led by CAWP Senior Scholar, Dr. Kira Sanbonmatsu, and research associate Shikshya Adhikari, they've partnered with the Office of Advanced Research Computing to support their research on women's political campaign contributions in congressional and state elections. As a result of this partnership, CAWP will be able to expand their campaign finance research to all fifty states in the coming months. https://lnkd.in/ex329DWn

The 2024 cohort of the Eagleton Science and Politics Program Fellowship gathered for its Closing Ceremony to celebrate and reflect on the Science Fellows' significant contributions during their one-year placement as science aides in the New Jersey Legislature and government departments. Fellows supported work with the New Jersey COVID-19 Pandemic Task Force on Racial and Health Disparities, advanced grid modernization & energy storage initiatives for the Division of Clean Energy, as well as played a key role in addressing pressing emerging issues such as deepfakes. Rutgers University–New Brunswick Chancellor Francine Conway offered the keynote address at the ceremony. Attendees also heard from Senator Bob Smith (NJ-17) on the importance of civic engagement for the common good. Five members of the 2024 cohort have been hired as full-time science analysts by their host offices, and one will continue his career on the federal level as part of the AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellowships Program in Washington, D.C.
