Check out this fascinating photo taken by ELS biologist Liz Vaughn during some recent fieldwork. These red, warty growths on the leaves of this willow are called galls. Galls are abnormal outgrowths of plant tissues. Think of them as nature's tiny apartments for insects and mites ๐ชฒ โ they get the plant to build them cozy homes. Our team see all sorts of interesting things like this while on monitoring projects. We work on projects like shorelines, streams, and wetlands, making sure they stay healthy and balanced. By keeping an eye on things like galls, we can tell a lot about the health of the environment, catch any issues early, and keep our clients happy. ๐ฃโ๏ธWhat a great way to start our 4th of July celebrations - yesterday ELS participated in the Longview Cardboard Boat Regatta, part of the city's Go 4th Festival. Captain Liz Vaughn led the ELS Express, with first mate Beau harnessing his years of paddling experience to make their way around the course and all the way to the finish line. We had an absolute blast and walked away with tons of new ideas for next year. The creativity on display at Lake Sacajawea was inspiring. Wishing everyone a fantastic 4th of July weekend! ๐

Our biologist Annie Jean has all the luck this week - while on a field visit in Battleground, she was greeted by this Common Whitetail dragonfly ๐ (Plathemis lydia). These dragonflies are known for their distinctive wing patterns and chunky white abdomen. They are prevalent across North America and are often found near ponds, lakes, and slow-moving streams. Have you had any fun #fieldfinds or insect encounters lately? #FieldWork #DragonflyFacts #Ecology #BiologistInAction

We are rounding out this month by congratulating Elizabeth Vaughn, who marks her first work anniversary with ELS! Liz joined us after earning her B.S. in Environmental and Ecosystem Sciences, with a minor in Biology, from Washington State University in 2023. As a first-generation college graduate, Liz's drive has been evident from the startโshe pursued her degree later in life while balancing marriage, work, and the arrival of her son, Augustus. Our Longview manager Steff shares, "Liz has truly been a powerhouse since day one. She plows through projects with incredible efficiency and precision. Her rapport with clients is fantastic, and she has an insatiable appetite for learning, always seeking to expand her knowledge and experience in the field. We are fortunate to have her on our team. Congratulations, Liz, on your remarkable first year with ELS!" Lizโs journey is a testament to her determination and resilience. As she beautifully puts it, "No matter who you are, what you have been through, or what you are going through, if you want it, you can achieve it. Life is short, get your hustle on, and shine bright like a diamond." Please join us in celebrating Liz and her fantastic achievements! Here's to many more years of success and growth!

Today, marks the official start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere! โ๏ธ As the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, we welcome longer days, warmer temperatures, and vibrant outdoor adventures. Some of our biologists from our Longview and Washougal offices are kicking off the season with a visit to the Coweeman Mitigation Bank. ๐ฟ Located along the picturesque Coweeman River in Kelso, Washington, this unique 300-acre site combines old-growth forest, wetlands, and riparian habitat. Itโs not just a mitigation bank; itโs a thriving ecosystem where nature and science intersect. Whether itโs documenting rare plant species, observing wildlife, or simply soaking up the sun, our biologists are making the most of this warm start to the season. If you are interested in learning more about ELS' mitigation banking services head to the link here: https://lnkd.in/gpf8qXHE #SummerSolstice #CoweemanMitigationBank #BiologistAdventures

A couple of weeks ago ELS Biologist Julianne and Marketing Coordinator Liz spent a fun few days at the Pacific Northwest Waterways Association (PNWA) Summer Conference in Clarkston, WA. They enjoyed a variety of insightful speakers, fantastic networking opportunities, and breathtaking views of the Snake River and the beautiful Clarkston/Lewiston area. The highlight of the first night was a speed boat tour of the Snake Riverโan experience they won't forget! We are grateful to the PNWA staffโnot only for a great event, but for their dedication and hard work to ensure the vitality of our waterways and the communities they support. ๐๐ Looking forward to the next one! #PNWA #SnakeRiver #Waterways
