Whose responsibility is it to provide skill-building opportunities? Let’s unpack upskilling. According to the ETS Human Progress Report, roughly 50% of people believe upskilling opportunities should come from educational institutions or their employers. Amidst today’s ever-changing world of work, companies must meet the demand of their employees and ensure they are supporting upskilling initiatives — whether through training, learning tools, skills assessment, or allotting time for employees to devote to skill building. Assessments need to deliver more meaningful and actionable feedback to learners beyond just a score. Why?👇 While assessments are typically viewed as an end to learning, they are best utilized as guides for where learners should focus next. For this reason, feedback is a critical aspect of assessments — and advancements in technology like AI will soon make personalized, high quality feedback accessible for all. 💡 Below are findings from our Charting the Future of Assessments whitepaper released earlier this year, co-written by Patrick Kyllonen and @Amit Sevak. A key insight: people recognize the power of feedback-based assessments, and are willing to accept feedback as a critical aspect of their learning journey. 📝 Employers, HR managers, and assessment developers must wake up to the workforce’s growing desire — and need — for feedback-based assessments. 🏢💼 Thoughts? 📚 Did you know that 93% of public-school teachers spend an average of almost $500 of their own money on classroom supplies, and many parents spend up to $700 per child on school essentials? The reality is, too many students start the school year without the basic tools they need to succeed. But at ETS, we believe in building solutions and making a difference. 🎒📒 Thanks to the incredible generosity of our ETS staff, our Center for Advocacy and Philanthropy (CAAP) collected backpacks and school supplies to support students. But we didn’t stop there. The funds raised through this initiative will be distributed to 160 partnering schools across 13 school districts in San Antonio, Texas, ensuring that students have the resources they need to thrive. It's more than just supplies, it's about empowering students by equipping them with the tools they need. We’re not just helping them succeed in school, we’re investing in their futures and building stronger communities. Special thanks to our volunteers for your compassion and dedication. Feedback is a critical aspect of assessment — and one that is often overlooked in favor of simply looking at scores. 📊 While many test-takers view assessments as an end to learning, and the immediate result as a final grade, they are in fact a fundamental part of the learning journey. With advancements in technology, personalized feedback from an assessment can guide test-takers toward resources to bolster their learning in areas where they struggled the most. A number on the page, while offering some insight into mastery of a subject, doesn’t paint a complete picture — it is merely a snapshot. Equipped with personalized feedback, students receive actionable steps forward to advance their learning. 💡📚 Embracing assessment to guide skill building and learning is critical for students and lifelong learners to remain relevant in today’s ever evolving world. It’s time to build beyond the numbers. What is the best piece of feedback you’ve received? Share in the comments below. 💬
