New on the blog: 🏜️🛰️ #EO satellites allow us to observe sandstorms in near-real-time, but existing detection algorithms struggle to provide fine-grained segmentation masks and do not always distinguish between dust and other kinds of aerosols. We addressed this by training a deep convolutional neural network to segment sandstorms in satellite imagery using supervised #MachineLearning. Today on #MapScaping: our very own Jason Gilman dives into the world of #NaturalLanguage Geocoding and discusses the future of ML and AI in geospatial. We're a little biased, but as far as we're concerned this is a must listen! Check it out here ⬇ , and get in touch with any questions you have for Jason and our team. You can read more about our work on natural language geocoding (and beyond) anytime on our blog: https://lnkd.in/drsyDSGV
I was really happy to talk with Daniel O'Donohue on the latest episode of his podcast MapScaping. We spoke about Natural Language Geocoding and other topics related to Generative AI and Machine Learning for Geospatial. In the second half, we discuss some really interesting applications and ideas for this technology. https://lnkd.in/ehNsrMkm

At Element 84, we love the ability to work and connect with incredible people each day in the geospatial sector and beyond. Exhibit A: While aiding in the fight against the Camp Fire in California this week, E84 engineer Trevor Skaggs had the amazing opportunity to rescue a group of puppies and their mother from the fire. Serving as a volunteer for Butte County Search and Rescue (BCSAR) has been one of the greatest highlights of my life. Due to my heavy work and travel schedule, I have had to take a leave of absence; however, my commitment to this amazing team of people only grows because of their incredible dedication to helping those in need. Recently, a story was published on the Butte County Sheriff's Facebook page that brought a little bit of good news amidst the devastation of the Park Fire that started in my hometown of Chico, CA. Here is an excerpt from that story: A Story of Hope from the Park Fire On Wednesday evening, as residents were frantically evacuating a remote area above Cohasset near Campbellville, a resident's truck became disabled. Unfortunately, the resident had to leave the truck behind, which included two adult Rottweilers and their puppies. The owner provided responders with the truck's location, but the area was initially inaccessible due to the fire. Yesterday, Trevor Skaggs, a dedicated member of BCSO Search and Rescue, flew to the area in a BCSO helicopter. Upon arrival, Trevor ran 1.5 miles to the location and found the puppies and their mother alive, though tired and very thirsty. Tragically, the puppies' father had not survived. After giving the mother and her puppies water and sharing bites of his protein bar, Trevor was able to get the five of them to follow him 1.5 miles back to the helicopter. The puppies and their mother were then flown to the Chico Airport, where they are now being cared for by members of the North Valley Animal Disaster Group. It has been a horrific few days for our community, and we are grateful to be able to share this heartwarming story of rescue and survival. This story highlights the bravery and compassion of BCSAR volunteers like Trevor Skaggs, who go above and beyond to help those in need, even in the face of great personal risk. The dedication of the volunteers and the support of the community truly make a difference during such challenging times. The 2024 Summer Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Meeting kicked off with a bang today in Asheville, NC! E84-er Jason Gilman contributed to the first-day excitement with his talk focused on the hype surrounding #AI and #ML, and how these concepts can be applied to search and discovery with geospatial data. If you missed his talk or if you're interested in learning more about these ideas come meet up with us at ESIP this week -- or just send us a message. We'd love to chat!
